A Chara,
The evenings are certainly getting cooler, and I think it’s fair to say with Halloween only around the corner, the GAA season is nearing its conclusion. Last Saturday evening in Glanmire our U19 footballers played in the premier 2 county final. A historic occasion where we played our first ever U19 final. With age gradings up in the air for the coming years it could be the last final in the age grade for quite a while. Our lads put in an impressive performance but unfortunately lost out to a very strong St Michaels side. Before we say anymore, we would like to send Olivier Jordan our best wishes after he picked up a bad hand injury early on in the game. Olivier has had a great year in his first year playing adult football and we’ve no doubt he’ll be back stronger than ever next year. Turning attention back to the game, Aghada had some great performers across the field. Cian O’Shea was impressive in goals, Aaron Atkinson and Ronan Murphy had strong performances in the half back line with John Walsh and Eoin Motherway working very hard in the upper end of the pitch. Fintan Cody also scored some top-quality points on the night. Aghada had led for large portions of this game and responded brilliantly to the concession of a goal via a penalty early in the second half by going up the other side of the pitch and winning a penalty of their own which Fintan dispatched with aplomb. Aghada found themselves three points to the good with twenty minutes to go but a long stoppage in the game seemed to spur our opponents on and they came out all guns blazing in the final period of the game. Before we knew it, our lads found themselves five points in arrears. It would have been easy for our young lads to fold but anyone who has seen this team over the last few years will know they don’t do throwing in the towel! The men from Rostellan threw everything at the city side and got the deficit down to three points. A one score game and we had a chance. Unfortunately, time was not on our side and after a marathon effort where the size five O’Neills ball flashed across the St Michaels goal on a few occasions, the final whistle sounded, and it was the city team who emerged victorious on the day.
Anyone in attendance on the day would tell you how hard our lads fought for every ball right until the bitter end which is certainly something the team can be proud of. Well done to all the players and the team management who put in a huge effort all year. A big thanks to our club members who prepared some refreshments for the team back in the clubhouse on Saturday evening. It was great to see everyone down in the club after a great year for the team. Overall, a wonderful year for this team that I think is summed up nicely in the team photo attached below. Over thirty players togged out for a final in October. A great sign for the future! Well done lads! Ath Fhada Abú.
Upcoming fixtures:
Best of luck to Aghada Junior Camogie team who play Inniscarra today (Saturday) at 4pm in Castlemartyr. This is a County semi-final so please make every effort to support the girls.
This evening, our very own Willie Wallis takes charge of the premier junior county hurling final at 5pm in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. A fantastic achievement for Willie and we wish him and all his officials all the best on the day.
Sunday is of course County Hurling final day where Blackrock take on St Finbarr’s in what promises to be a cracking game. It will also be a memorable day for the Imokilly team of 1997 who will be presented to the crowd in recognition of their county success 25 years ago. Our own Ronan Dwane was a member of this team while Anthony Cashman was a selector. Best of luck to Ronan who is also involved with Ballygiblin on Saturday.
Next Tuesday our Junior C footballers play St Catherine’s in a what is essentially a must win group game at 7:45pm in Rostellan. Please come down and support our last adult team that is left in championship action.
While we are on fixtures, well done to all the Aghada players who togged out for Midleton CBS in the Harty Cup against St Colman’s, Fermoy on Wednesday including Sean O’Callaghan who played corner back.

As you would have read last week, our healthy club committee have organised for ‘The Two Norrie’s’ to visit Aghada next week and talk to our playing groups about some modern-day issues they face in their young lives. This promises to be a fantastic event which is being held this Wednesday, the 19th of October in Saleen School (note venue change). If you would like to attend, contact Gillian Berry or your child’s lead member who will point you in the right direction.

7s Hurling:
Finally, to finish off this week, I thought I would finish with a picture of our club hurlers who played 7s hurling last night in Rostellan. A great night of hurling, fun and a bit of craic was had by all involved and its nights like this that make our organisation so special. Well done to the players and intermediate hurling management who ran the event.
Well, that’s it for this week. Please make every effort to support the Camogie team later this evening and also the Junior C team on Tuesday night. Enjoy the weekend.
