Aghada GAA Juvenile News
Hi folks, I hope this newsletter finds you well, we are always thankful to people for the act of kindness in volunteerism and then there are people who go that extra mile. Our great club woman Vera Terry once again went that extra mile as the main coordinator for Aghada GAA, Camogie and Ladies football clubs in the club’s participation in the 24-hour relay for life held in the Midleton CBS grounds as they raised funds for the cancer society, a charity so close to many people’s hearts. There was Vera for the full 24 hours organising and cajoling everyone taking part, all night long with her booming voice and hearty laugh a tonic for all involved and then you had the people who walked in the early hours of the morning, setting the alarms, and getting out of bed to put in the miles, awesome contributions from exceptional people. A big thank you to all who took part on behalf of the club, an emotional journey for some while completing the walk can give a great lift to people and perhaps it is because of those very people who care so much that the feelings of joy are so great, so if you’ve just done it then well done.
U15 football Championship Aghada 2-8 Cobh 6-10
The score line does not do this Aghada team justice as the boys from across the harbour had a penchant for finding goals at opportune moments while our lads also had their chances but finding the back of the net alluded them. This game was played in the harbour town of Cobh last Wednesday night and although we were behind at half time the management team would have been happy enough with how things were going as the team showed plenty of endeavour, while having a lot of possession and creating some very good chances in free-flowing football moves. Dara O’ Conchubhair strode forward from the pivotal number 6 position to fire over our first point and it was score for score with our opponents for most of the first half. Well worked points from Eanna Crowley, Sam McAllister and Josh McCarthy and a well struck penalty from Andrew Murphy after Sam Mac was upended in the square left the half time score 1-4 to 2-6. We started the second half in whirlwind fashion with Cian Moore finding the net but that was as good as it got as Cobh began to find space and with clinical finishing ran out impressive winners. Team & Scorers Cormac Crowley, Pierce McLoughlin, Seán O’ Brien, Eoghan Walsh, Josh McCarthy 0-1, Dara O’ Conchubhair 0-2, Cillian Falvey, Sam McAllister 0-1, Eanna Crowley 0-1, Tom Walsh, Andrew Murphy 1-2, Joe Connolly, Ronan Norris, Cian Moore 1-1, Cormac Walsh subs used Jude Devoy, Jago Evans, Adam Lewis.
East U13 Football Division 1. Aghada 0-11 St. Colman’s 1-7 report by Diarmuid O’ Shea
In the 6th and final game in phase 2 our u13 Footballers had a 1 point win over neighbours St Colman’s. Having won the 1st game in phase 1 by a point , it was great to dig out a win by the same margin 9 games later. St Colman’s took the game to their hosts and opened the scoring and pressed at every opportunity. Making a start at wing forward Kaylan Cunningham opened Aghada’s account before Eoghan O' Shea pointed from a free. Colman’s were to nip in for a goal before the lads in green started to play with more intent. A few balls were hanging around the dust in the Colman’s goalmouth and Conor Fleming and Robbie Oosthuizen were unlucky not to goal. Robbie scored a peach of a point to add to Aghada’s tally and Eoghan from play and a free from Shay Rooney brought the lads in green to within a point at HT. Seán O’ Reilly came in at HT and Jamie Sweeney and Trystan Pomphrett soon after also. Shay from play and Eoghan with a free meant Aghada got their noses in front. Then came the score of the game when Kaylan Cunningham inter passed from wing back and kicked his 2nd of 3 scores. Eoghan from a free for his 4th and then Shay with his 3rd followed by Kaylan with his 3rd also opened a bit of a gap . All the while Sam Morgan, Ciaran Cashman, Rossa White and Jake Morrissey were keeping Colman’s at bay and Even Courtney anchored midfield and ran effortlessly and Conor Padden played consistently again. Colin White and Darragh Crowley were also introduced to help see out the game. Rossa White pictured at the toss and Rossa will captain the team for the rest of the year. We also wish a speedy recovery to Shay Rooney who picked up a hand injury in the game. Panel on the day: Sam Morgan, Ciaran Cashman, Rossa White, Aidan Johnston, Jake Morrissey, Conor Padden, Hugh O’ Loungsigh, Evan Courtney, Kaylan Cunningham, Shay Rooney, Peter Mulcahy, Conor Fleming, Eoghan O’ Shea, Robbie Oosthuizen, Cathal Lowney, Jamie Sweeney, Seán O’ Reilly, Trystan Pomphrett, Colin White, Darragh Crowley
U17 C-3 Football League Aghada 2-11 Inniscarra 4-11
Last Sunday morning in the famous venue of Ballyanly the place where we won our first adult county final in the year of 1989, we could not rekindle those heroics, but we put up a fine performance all the same. Driven on by the teak tough defending of corner backs Colm White and Ronan Walsh and centre back David Wallace we took the game to our opponents with Cian Murphy and Finn Berry getting on an amount of good ball up front. Robert Dean with a composed finish scored our first half goal and Samuel O’ Driscoll got the pick of our points with a quality brace. James O’ Donnell and Seán Corkery shared the goalkeeping duties playing a half each and equally adept in goal and out the field. The second half was the James Motherway show hitting a magnificent 7 points from play and frees with energetic midfielder Ronan Devoy bursting through the middle to billow the net for our 2nd green flag. Despite the great football and passing moves on show from our lads, Inniscarra had a little more in reserve to run out deserving winners in the end. Team & scorers James O’ Donnell, Colm White, Seán O Callaghan, Ronan Walsh, Conor Baxx, David Wallace, Seán Corkery, Ronan Devoy 1-0, Cian Murphy, James Motherway 0-7, Joshua Halpin, Finn Berry, Samuel O’ Driscoll 0-2 Robert Dean 0-2.
U12 hurling league semi-final. Aghada 1-9 Youghal 1-5
The battle of the seasiders took place in a glorious Rostellan last Monday night and after a tense encounter it was our lads who were floating high on the crest of a wave when the final whistle sounded. We opened brightly with a couple of well taken points from centre forward David Murphy but with defences on top scores were hard to come by. Our backs excelled all through with Dylan Kearns at full back and Donncha Walsh at centre back soundness personified ably assisted by those around them Finbar Alcock, Cormac Cashman and Eoin Kirrane. Our opponents struck a goal coming up to half-time giving our goalkeeper Rian O’ Brien Higgins no chance as he was otherwise unbeatable with his safe handling and excellent puck outs being a feature of the game. We hit more points from David and the impressive Dara O’ Brien, but it was Youghal who led at the break 0-4 to 1-3. The second half was a masterclass in skill and work rate from our boys as we got off to the perfect start a high delivery from dynamic midfielder Jack Kelleher was taken down brilliantly by corner forward Darragh Callanan and he made no mistake to rattle the net with an emphatic finish. We were in the ascendency now with Cathal Lowney and Leon O’ Connor full of running and Marcus O’ Loughlin working his socks off we were keeping Youghal at bay. More scores flowed from David and Dara as we pushed out the lead, a lead we would never relinquish as we booked a spot in the final in a complete team performance that will please the management team of Colm O’ Brien, Anthony Oosthuizen and Aaron Stafford no end. Panel & scorers Rian O’ Brien Higgins, Finbar Alcock, Dylan Kearns, Leon O’ Connor, Cormac Cashman, Donncha Walsh, Eoin Kirrane, Cathal Lowney, Jack Kelleher, Dara O’ Brien 0-4, David Murphy 0-5, Marcus O’ Loughlin, Darragh Callanan 1-0, Sam Ahern, Tim O’ Hanlon, Harry Burgoyne, Darragh Crowley, Seán Walsh.
U15 C-3 hurling league Aghada 0-10 Erin’s Own 0-8
Also, on Monday night on our forest field we took on the boys from Caherlag in the u15 c-3 hurling league. The game took awhile to catch fire as both teams were cancelling each other out. Special mentions to young 13-year-olds Robbie Oosthuizen, Jake Morrissey and Sam Morgan who certainly did not look out of place and gave a fine exhibition of hurling skill. We had excellent scores from Cormac Walsh, Jack Mulcahy, Adam Lewis, and Seán O Brien as we ran out deserving winners on the night. Team & scorers Sam McAllister, Eoghan Walsh, Josh McCarthy, Sam Morgan, Corm,ac Crowley, Jackson Kearns, Jake Morrissey, Seán O Brien 0-2, Mattie O Leary captain, Adam Lewis 0-1 Cormac Walsh 0-1, Alex Buckley, Robbie Oosthuizen, Jack Mulcahy 0-6, Austin Schoeman.
