Aghada GAA Juvenile News
Hi folks, I hope this newsletter finds you well, our Cúl Camp is up and running and the weather has been kind this week and this certainly makes it easier for all concerned, no better place to enjoy Gaelic games than down in Rostellan on a summer’s day on the edge of Cork harbour, the second biggest natural harbour in the world only behind Sydney harbour. Many thanks to all our sponsors of this year’s camp, your support is greatly appreciated, we will show a full list of the sponsors next week. Athletics continues to be on an upward curve in the parish with fantastic contribution’s once again at the All-Ireland track and field championships in Tullamore, from our underage players. Well done to all who qualified Cathal and Micheál Lowney, Jack, Dara, and May Kelleher, Aisling, Darragh and Ronan Callanan, Leon O’ Connor and Chloe Thatcher. Ronan Callanan won double silver medals in the 60m sprint and in the U11 4 x 100m relay along with Dara Kelleher and Micheál Lowney, with bronze medals going to Jack Kelleher, Leon O Connor and Darragh Callanan in the u12 4 x 100m relay well done to all involved who were mixing it with the cream of Irish athletics. Kieran Kingston has stepped down as the Cork senior hurling bainisteoir after giving us some great days out, supporting the boys in red and we thank him and wish him well. Pat Ryan of Sars Glanmire was officially announced as the new manager and we also wish him well the rumour mill is currently in overdrive that one of our own club members will be joining him on the management ticket, he is currently coaching our U10 and U17hurling teams and this coupled with dining at the top table of inter county hurling will be music to the ears of our academy manager as they say a rising tide lifts all boats. More about this exciting development in due course.
Depleted for a variety of reasons, holidays, swim camps, injuries etc our U15 footballers sunk to defeat against our seaside neighbours Youghal last Wednesday night in Rostellan. Our opponents were well organised putting big numbers behind the ball and breaking at speed when in possession. We defended resolutely and our ace netminder Jago Evans brought off a spectacular penalty save that only left 4 points in it at the break 0-2 to 0-6 in Youghal’s favour. We pushed up on the away side’s defensive unit in the second half and started to make some headway against the blanket defence with full forward Jack Linehan a real fulcrum in our attacking play. Cian Moore kicked some nice points, and we scored a wonderful goal when centre forward Andrew Murphy found the net with a delicious lob. Youghal hit us with a well worked goal as we spurned a few gilt-edged chances at the other end. Pierce McLoughlin and Cillian Falvey were giants in defence working hard to keep the lively forwards at bay but right on the stroke of full-time we were outdone again when Youghal struck for goal number 2 to leave the final score 1-4 to 2-8 for a deserved victory however they were made work very hard for the win from the battling display from the home side. Team Jago Evans, Jackson Kearns, Jude Devoy, Pierce McLoughlin, Cillian Falvey, Dara O’ Conchobar, Seán O’ Brien, Colm O’ Donoghue, Josh McCarthy, Ronan Norris, Andrew Murphy, Joe Connolly, Cian Moore, Jack Linehan, Cillian Burke subs used Tom Walsh, Sam McAllister, Adam Lewis.
Our U15 c-3 footballers were away in Cobh last Friday night and it looked like we were about to be taught a lesson from the home side as we were staring defeat in the face after a brilliant opening half from Cobh, we were trailing 1-10 to 0-2 at the short whistle. We made a couple of positional changes with Jack Dorney manning the full back berth and Jack Mulcahy moving into the forward line. Jack Mull kicked 2 fine points to aid the recovery, and this seemed to spur on our lads as the drama gathered momentum. Quickfire goals from Cian Moore, Josh McCarthy and Cillian Burke had us level and we drove on from here with 2 more majors the impressive Josh with his 2nd and a fine Austin Schoeman effort to complete the remarkable turnaround final score Cobh 1-11 Aghada 5-10 well done to all involved.
Premier 2 Football League Match Report By Vince Rohan
Aghada 1-06 Fermoy 1-12
Aghada U17s travelled to Fermoy last Friday evening to play their final league game of the year. Aghada who were down a few bodies with holiday season upon us were hoping to get a good performance in before championship. Just as the game threw in, a downpour of rain began to make conditions extremely difficult for the remainder of the game. Aghada started brightly but struggled to convert some good periods of possession. Our hosts were first to get on the scoreboard after about ten minutes from a pointed free. Aghada responded well scoring two on the bounce but this was to be the last time Aghada led in the game. Fermoy scored a lovely point from play before grabbing a very fortuitous goal. All of a sudden Aghada found themselves six down after starting quite well. Aghada got themselves back into the game with a brilliant solo effort from Cian Hegarty who picked the ball up 45 metres from goal before driving at the Fermoy defence and burying a bullet of a shot into the bottom corner of the goal. This halved the deficit going into half time. Unfortunately for Aghada, even after starting the second half on the front foot, Fermoy were able to keep us at arms length for the remainder of the game. Aghada were reduced to 14 with a quarter remaining and this is where Fermoy widened their lasting advantage. Aghada will be happy with the effort shown by all the players who togged out but will be hoping to fine tune a few things heading into championship next week. Up next for our minors is their hurling league final on Friday evening. Hopefully the lads can get a win here to get a boost heading into a big few championship weeks.
Best on the day for Aghada were Fionn O’Callaghan, David Wallace, Ronan Devoy, Robert Dean, James Hurley and Evan Crowley.
Team Vs Fermoy: John Walsh, Conor Geary, Fionn O’Callaghan, Evan Crowley, Tomás Condon, David Wallace, Aaron Kearns, Hugh Mulcahy, Ronan Devoy, Cian Hegarty, Fionn O’Connor, Seán O’Callaghan, Joshua Halpin, James Hurley, Robert Dean, Ronan Walsh, Diarmuid Cotter, James O’Donnell.
We travelled by road to our seaside neighbours Youghal last Monday evening in the u12 hurling league and this turned out to be a very competitive affair with no quarter asked or given. The game was played with reduced numbers of 12 under competition rules as Youghal only had 12 players on the night. Our opponents were first to make an impact on the scoreboard registering 1-1 and were tackling tenaciously with their hooking and blocking unsettling our lads before we got to grips with proceedings and went onto lead at half-time with Dara O’ Brien crashing home a goal and then knocking over 2 points one from a long range free. Our backs put up the shutters and we led by the bare minimum at the break. Youghal came out with the sun at their backs and took a commanding lead scoring 3-1 without reply, however our lads refused to wilt and with the introduction of Dara Callanan, Seán Walsh, and Leon O’ Connor we began to eat into the lead with Seán scoring 1-1 and Cathal Lowney also finding the net, unfortunately we ran out of time and our brave battling qualities just came up short. Final score 4-5 to 3-4 Team & scorers Rian O’ Brien Higgins, Finbarr Alcock, Dylan Kearns, Donncha Walsh, Eoin Kirrane, Jack Kelleher, Cormac Cashman, Cathal Lowney 1-0, Sam Ahern, David Murphy, Dara O’ Brien 1-3, Marcus O’ Loughlin, Seán Walsh 1-1, Darragh Callanan, Leon O’ Connor.
U13 football match report by Diarmuid O’ Shea
Aghada 5-22 to Carrigtwohill 3-5. Playing their 2nd game on a full-sized pitch the u13 lads again played football as a team and again showed their point kicking skills, no doubt sharpened over a number of weeks while practising for the Rebel Óg point kicking skills competition. Peter Mulcahy was quick out of the blocks opening Aghada’s account. Playing with the aid of a slight slope the pressure was kept on the Carrig kickout after every score. Trystan Pomphrett playing his first game this year at U13 was a thorn in the home teams defence and also registered his own early score to settle into the game. Playing in white Aghadas defence was strong and a burst onto a ball by Kaylan Cunningham which he delivered into the full forward line was finished by razor sharp Conor Fleming to raise the only green flag of the 1st half. Shay Rooney was clinical from play and frees with Eoghan Yogi O’ Shea popping over a free and a couple from play, Trystan with another couple also the scores were well into double figures. All this while Rossa White, captain, and Ciaran Cashman were building attacks from the back. With 1 sub on the night a few lads were rotated on and off. At HT the score was 1-17 to 1-2 . At the start of the 2nd half Carrigtwohill threatened and got a goal early on. Shay and Eoghan then kicked points at the other end to offset this and slowly Aghadas lads got used to the slope and built attack after attack. The scores kept coming with Eoghan and Shay kicking a few more each and Marcus O’ Loughlin popped in for a goal also. Meanwhile back at the ranch Aidan Johnston stood his ground and Rossa kept ball and man away from Aghadas goal. And not to mention David Murphy and Evan Courtney covering acres from midfield on the big pitch. Despite putting up a big score, the biggest trait shown by Aghada was discipline. Despite everything thrown at them they kept their cool, not 1 card issued to an Aghada player and deserve credit for that alone and to ensure 6 wins from 6 was all the more sweeter. Team and scorers: Cathal Lowney, Cormac Cashman, Ciaran Cashman, Rossa White, Aidan Johnston, Donncha Walsh, David Murphy 0-1, Evan Courtney 0-1, Marcus O’ Loughlin 1-0, Shay Rooney 1-6, Peter Mulcahy 0-5, Conor Fleming 1-0, Eoghan O’ Shea 2-6, Trystan Pomphrett 0-3, Colin White.
