Aghada GAA Juvenile News

Hi folks, what is around the next corner if only we knew…. Then we would not have to worry about what might be. What we imagine is often much worse than what actually happens, but if we had a choice would we really like to know the future? Perhaps it’s the expectation that makes life so exciting? Well 3 lads from our parish, former Juvenile GAA players are making the trip of a lifetime, testing that theory. Now Paul, Peter and Kevin are heading to Kazakhstan on the way to Australia in a €3k Jeep they picked up in Holland and drove back to Ireland to convert it for sleeping and cooking, they are now currently in Turkey, and you can follow their adventures on their Instagram page @the awkwardwaydown. You make great friends through GAA, friends you might even travel the world with and as we always say no matter where you go, remember you always have a home in Rostellan. Make the most of life – live for today. Cope with tomorrow’s problems only when and IF they happen.

On Monday on a beautiful summer evening our U12 hurlers took on Watergrasshill in Rostellan and we were treated to a fantastic game of hurling as both teams had some spectacular scores and exciting passages of play in the bright sunshine. We started well with a couple of Dara O’ Brien points the second a wonderful turn and shot after a fine high catch. Centre forward David Murphy with his pace and trickery added a couple more as the hill who had 2 points on the board struck for the only goal of the half with perseverance paying off after a prolonged goalmouth scramble. We were defending well from the hill attacks with Dylan Kearns, Finbarr Alcock, Cormac Cashman, Donncha Walsh and Eoin Kirrane all to the fore. We were competing for every ball up front and fouls on Marcus O’ Loughlin, Harry Burgoyne and Sam Ahern were punished by the reliable free taking of Dara O’ Brien to leave it all square at the interval 0-7 to 1-4. We started promisingly on the resumption with Cathal Lowney and Jack Kelleher getting a grip at midfield and David Murphy finding the bottom corner of the net with a cracking shot and Dara O’ Brien hit a nice point as we moved 4 clear. The hills penchant for scoring goals was causing us bother and they hit a brace to move ahead, it was gripping stuff with the end-to-end nature of the game fascinating. The introduction of Seán Walsh, Dara Kelleher, Leon O’ Connor and Darragh Crowley added impetus and we took the initiative once again. More superb Dara points and 1-1 from David had us in the ascendancy but the hill were not going away and we were level entering injury time. We hit the post and saw a close in free cleared off the line as the hill mounted another attack and were thwarted by outstanding goalkeeper Rian O’ Brien Higgins who stopped the ball from going over the bar but unfortunately it was the hill who picked up the rebound and slammed it to the net to clinch the game. Cruel on our lads a draw would have been a fair result in what was a cracking game of hurling by two committed and skilful sides. Final score 2-9 to 4-6. Panel Rian O’ Brien Higgins, Dylan Kearns, Finbarr Alcock, Cormac Cashman, Donncha Walsh, Eoin Kirrane, Jack Kelleher, Cathal Lowney, Marcus O’ Loughlin, David Murphy 2-3, Harry Burgoyne, Dara O’ Brien 0-6, Sam Ahern, Seán Walsh, Dara Kelleher, Leon O’ Connor, Darragh Crowley.

On a perfect night for hurling, we welcomed Kiltha Óg to our forest field in the U14 league on Tuesday. Dynamic midfielder Tom Walsh got us off the mark in the first minute with a point, but our visitors replied almost immediately with a goal, we kept the scoreboard ticking over with some quality points from Jake Morrissey, Sam McAllister, John Dorney and Cillian Burke. Kiltha struck some good scores and Tom hit a brace, but it was the Dungourney/Castlemartyr combination who led by 2-6 to 0-8 after finding the net again. We started with intent in the second half and were back within a point when a great run by Adam Lewis down the line put in Tom who in turn found Jack Dorney and he made no mistake crashing a fierce shot to the net. Tom levelled it but that was as good as it got as Kiltha upped the gears once more to pull away. We did manage another goal this time from Jake Morrissey and our boys fought hard until the end but had to give second best to a Kiltha side who were the better team on the night. Final score 2-11 v 4-18 Team & scorers John Dorney, Cormac Crowley, Jackson Kearns, Eoghan Walsh, Kaylan Cunningham, Josh McCarthy, Jake Morrissey 1-1, Sam McAllister 0-2, Tom Walsh 0-5, Cillian Burke 0-1, John Dorney 1-2, Jack Mulcahy, Adam Lewis, Alex Buckley, Austin Schoeman.

Well done to Jude Devoy, Isaac Oosthuizen and Colm O’ Donoghue who all played their part contributing strongly to the U15 hurling Rebel Óg North/East combination who enjoyed a fine win over a Wexford selection in New Ross last Saturday morning.

The Best of luck to all six class students who will be finishing up national school in the coming days and will be on a different journey of pastures new in secondary school education. We hope this new adventure will be an exciting and rewarding time for all.
