Aghada GAA Juvenile News
Hi folks, children all over Ireland were going to bed last Sunday night dreaming of being the next Tony Kelly and re-enacting that amazing side-line cut over and over again after the enthralling Munster hurling final in Thurles. We all need to dream now and then and when I was a boy I used to look forward to getting my copy of Roy of the Rovers every weekend in Paddy O’ Shea’s post office, that was also a shop back then and even Roy Race would be hard pressed to live up to the excitement of the magical Tony Kelly last Sunday. We all have high hopes to begin with- doctor, lawyer, pop star, actor, premiership soccer player, county hurler, camogie, football player, international star all rank high but what we achieve in our lifetime, with the cards we are dealt is totally up to each of us alone, the richest person in the world today was probably once asked-“ and what do you want to be when you grow up”- we can all dream.
Speaking of dreams our U12 footballers dreams of winning the Billy Ahern this year did not materialise in Rostellan on bank holiday Monday, that honour went to our seaside neighbours Cobh, a fine strong team who defeated Killeagh in the final. We contested the plate final and were unlucky to lose by the narrowest of margins to another fine team in Mayfield. We started the final poorly and were behind 2-4 to 0-2 at half time but a spirited second half performance had the deficit down to the bare minimum when time ran out on our gallant fightback and alas it was not meant to be. Heartiest congratulations to both Cobh and Mayfield and many thanks to all 8 teams who participated in what was undoubtably a glorious feast of football organised brilliantly by the host club. So, a big thank you to all involved in making it such a special day to the committee and mentors who left no stone unturned in their preparation, to those who helped out with parking and getting the 3 pitches ready. To the parents who organised the catering and helped with the clean-up. To our president Johnty Motherway who sang the national anthem and to Anthony Oosthuizen who provided the PA and music as well as Pa O’ Connor MC. To the referees who kept the games running smoothly and to all who helped in anyway to make the day so special. A special thank you to Leanne Ahern and family for their support in making this tournament so special as it goes from strength to strength in memory of the never to be forgotten Billy.
Our U13 footballers enjoyed a victory on the Road after an early Sunday morning journey to take on the home side Glenville. We started with intent having the lion’s share of possession with some nice early scores albeit also hitting a few wides after being in advantageous positions. The home side hit back with some good points before we hit back with a well worked team goal to lead at half time 1-3 to 0-5. We upped the ante considerably in the second half with some great defending and were exciting going forward as the team played very well as a unit and making full use of the panel of players, we ran out comfortable winners in the end 1-15 to 1-8.
Panel : Cathal Lowney, Donncha Walsh, Ciaran Cashman, Rossa White, Aiden Johnston, Jake Morrissey captain, Seán O’ Reilly, Hugh O’ Loinsigh, Evan Courtney, Conor Padden, Shay Rooney, Peter Mulcahy, Conor Fleming, Kaylan Cunningham, James O’ Neill, Cormac Cashman, David Murphy, Harry Burgoyne, Jack Kelleher, and special mentions to Eoghan O’ Shea who made an appearance after his injury lay off and Robbie Oosthuizen although injured, he still travelled to support the lads.
The Best of luck to Scartleigh National School, Saleen who on Friday will compete in both the Hurling and Camogie Sciath Na Scol finals. Enjoy the occasion, go for it and hopefully ye can bring some silverware back to the parish. Maybe the silverware might be on display at the summer fair being held in the school on this Saturday 11th with fun for everyone and from 2pm to 5pm, with free entry it promises to be a wonderful event that all can enjoy.
The best of luck to Scoil Íosagáin Aghada National school who are holding a Goalathon - Goals for the Goals to help with the cost of ongoing outdoor developments on Wednesday 8th and your support would be greatly appreciated with sponsorship cards where every line sold will be entered in a raffle.
Go Games continue to excite for our academy with the U8’s entertaining St Colman’s in hurling, the U9’s hosted Glanmire in some cracking games of Football, the U10’s played hurling against St Colman’s and the U11’s played hurling away to Youghal on the Friday while entertaining St Nicks in football on a wet Tuesday night in Rostellan.
Congratulations to the inspirational Kenneth Kelleher, who had an amazing 8th place finish overall in a sensational time of 2hrs 35mins 41 seconds in the Cork City Marathon in what must be a record for this parish, although open to correction answers on a postcard please.
And finally, the very best of luck to everyone sitting the Junior and Leaving Certificate Exams this week, remember life is a journey not a destination. Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat!
