Aghada GAA Juvenile News
Hi folks hope you had a lovely Easter weekend and an eggs citing time was had by all, whether you over done the chocolate, enjoyed a nice Sunday lunch, headed to a match even if the result was disappointing, enjoyed a night out or in, went dancing or listening to music, watched a movie, went for a walk a run or a swim, went away or stayed at home, spent hours and hours talking-walking-eating-together spent with family and friends. We all have dreams of the future, we dream of what might be, the ups and downs of the road ahead, are just parts of our journey, made easier because we travel it together.
We took on our seaside neighbours Youghal in the premier 2 hurling league in Rostellan last Wednesday evening in what was a good competitive game before both teams were in action in Féile at the weekend. We started strongly Cormac Walsh setting up Jude Devoy nicely for goal number one, Cormac then struck over a point and found the net himself after a defence splitting run from centre back Colm O’ Donoghue. Our opponents were also having their moments especially from their centre forward who was causing us problems with his direct running, skill, and physique. We still had the better of the first half as Jude kept the scoreboard ticking over from play and frees as Jack Linehan also found the range, we led at the interval on a score line of 2-8 to 2-2. Youghal came at us at the start of the second half looking to get back in the game as our defence held firm with Adam Lewis coolness personified in goals while outside him Cillian Scanlon was strong and dependable at full back, Colm put the shackles on the dangerous centre forward, as Seán O’ Brien, Cian Moore, Sam McAllister and Cormac Crowley cleared a world of ball we gradually found our rhythm again and made it count on the scoreboard. Jack Dorney got in for a brace of well taken goals and substitute Jackson Kearns also found the net as we ran out comfortable winners in the end 5-12 to 3-7 in a solid team performance.
Next up were our U17 C-3 hurling team who enjoyed a comprehensive win against Ballincollig in Rostellan’s quarry field on Thursday night under lights. We hit top gear here led by impressive captain Diarmuid Cotter to run out resounding winners on the night.
We turned our attention to Féile hurling action in Carrigtwohill on Saturday morning with our U15 team. This turned out to be an absorbing contest with 3 very evenly matched teams with the outcome of the group going right down to the wire. With the group system the first game is vital and unfortunately, we were on the back foot as we started slowly and lost out to Sliabh Rua a Ballymartle and Belgooly amalgamation 3-7 to 2-6. Next up it was the homeside Carrigtwohill and this turned out to be a low scoring affair ending 4 points apiece and we will feel we should have come away with maximum points as some good scoring opportunities went agonisingly wide. The final game of the group had it all still to play for as if results went our way and we could beat Bishopstown then there was a possibility of all 3 teams finishing on 3 points each and it would go to scoring difference, alas it wasn’t to be and we lost out 3-8 to 3-5 in a close contest that could have gone either way and it was the town who ended up topping the group and going through. Although disappointed there was enough to suggest we could be a force to be reckoned with come championship and it would not take much to turn the tide in our favour, well done to all involved who gave their best on the day.
On Monday night we travelled to Mayfield in the U12 football league, and the boys followed up their great win in the hurling the week before with another accomplished display. The football on show was a joy to behold from ace netminder Cathal Lowney who produced a string of top class saves in the first half before he was relocated to midfield in the second half where he excelled with his athletic ability to Dylan Kearns and Marcus O’ Loughlin solid all through in the full back line Colin White, Harry Burgoyne, Eoin Kirrane and Darragh Crowley getting forward at every opportunity Jack Kelleher and Cormac Cashman lording midfield we had strong performances from Tim O’ Hanlon and Cormac Byrne and a host of goal scorers in David Murphy, Donncha Walsh, Rian O’ Brien Higgins, Tristian Roberts, Sam Ahern, Jack and Cathal to run out convincing winners at the fine Mayfield complex. A very pleasing performance for the management team who will be delighted with the work ethic and overall standard of football displayed by the whole panel of players.
The good form of Cork East continued in the Celtic league hurling challenge competition as they accounted for Waterford last Saturday afternoon 4-16 to 0-16 with our own representatives all getting on the scoresheet. Fionn O’ Connor scored 2-2 from full forward alongside him Noah Devoy hit 1-3 while Oscar Slyle at midfield and Aaron Kearns at wing back chipped in with points in an impressive performance indeed, well done lads and you can see the team in action in their next outing as they play Limerick treaty on Saturday next in Rostellan at mid-day.
Also, on Saturday we welcome Monasterevin from Kildare for an under 11 football go games style tournament this is due to take place between 11 and 12.45 and it would be great to give a big Aghada welcome to the Lilywhites from Kildare, so why not pop down to the club as between the hurling and football a great morning’s entertainment will be on show.
