Aghada GAA Juvenile News

Hi folks, hope all is well and you have your census form well filled out, no doubt the population of the parish has increased significantly from the last one as it has in many areas, one of the most interesting aspects of the form was the time capsule and it got me thinking if Aghada GAA were filling it out, we could put down is Pearse O’ Neill still playing for the club and going on his powerful performance at midfield on Sunday morning he very well might be. We held a monster U8 football blitz on Saturday morning with 38 teams and 190 players taking part, a huge undertaking and a big thank you to all involved from the club, the juvenile committee and in particular PJ Hurley and Mark White in charge of car parking duties, everyone who helped out with the catering and a special mention to Damien Keohane for his help here and to Paudie O’ Brien GDA and our own John Connolly for the excellent coordination that kept the games running smoothly.

Our first game of the week had us travelling to Togher to take on St Finbarr’s in the U15 P2 hurling league and our lads put in a mighty performance coming out on top in a quality contest. We started brightly with 3 quick points 2 from centre forward Jude Devoy and another from Jack Linehan at right half forward and were soon brought back down to earth when a high ball into our square fell kindly for the Barr’s corner forward who gave our reliable goalkeeper Adam Lewis no chance with a slick ground shot. The rest of the half was nip and tuck with more points from Jude, Jack and full forward Jack Dorney putting us ahead by the narrowest of margins at the break 1-6 to 0-10 with Sam McAllister putting the shackles on the Barr’s most dangerous forward. The hurling in the second half continued to excite with both teams battling for supremacy with quality points from midfielder Issac Oosthuizen, centre back Colm O’ Donoghue and Jude keeping our noses in front as our defence kept the Barr’s at bay with some tenacious defending and when the final whistle went, we were ahead 1-15 to 0-19 on a good night for the boys in green. We were also supposed to be travelling to Togher in the premier 2 hurling league, but the game was unfortunately called off due to illness in the Barr’s camp and that game will be rearranged for a future date.

A depleted U13 hurling side travelled to Killeagh minus seven regulars due to illness and injury and succumbed to a heavy defeat and this is not a true reflection of this team who will no doubt look to bounce back as quickly as possible, despite the defeat we had notable performances from main scorer Robbie Oosthuizen, midfielder Eoghan O Shea, corner back Eoin Kirrane and forward Tim O’ Hanlon with Sam Morgan excelling when moved to centre back.

Our U17 c-3 hurling team took on Midleton in Clonmult park last Saturday with a strong wind blowing back towards the town giving a strong advantage to the team with it at their backs and it was Midleton who had it in the first half and with 2 quickfire goals they raced into a 2-5 to 0-3 interval lead. We took control in the second period and with John Walsh and Samuel O’ Driscoll scoring sublime points we started to make headway and prominent displays from Conor Baxx, Conor Geary, Colm White, Evan Crowley, and Seán Corkery had us on the front foot as a fine poacher’s goal from Stephen O’ Shea put us right in contention and we were a shade unlucky not to come away with at least a draw as Midleton held out to win 2-10 to 1-12.

Well done to St Marys High school and our own Aghada girls who won All Ireland medals at the weekend and to coach Emma Farmer and all involved in the historic achievement.

A date for your diary, Aghada GAA Cúl Camp has been set for the 4th July, online booking system not open yet, more details regarding booking etc to follow in due course.
