Juvenile GAA News
Hi folks we had super Sunday last weekend in national football leagues with the calculators out such were the permutations in the relegation and promotion stakes. TG4 came into their own with an NFL redzone style show regularly switching from one game to another as the action unfolds, I know people will continue to say the league is the league and the championship is the championship and they are right, but it is still a barometer of competitiveness and the highlights reel indicated that. The juvenile club are in the early stages of the leagues with competitive and enjoyable matches every week and when it comes to championship, we will be doing full reports on all the games but with the number of league outings for the club the highlights reel will have to do for now. The first team into action were our U14 footballers who headed to Sallybrook to take on Glanmire in round 1. This was a very entertaining game with a great standard of football on show. We had goals from Will O’ Mahoney, Alex Buckley, Max Daly, and Aesa Murphy, while the best on show on the night was Austin (Ossie) Schoeman who put in a tremendous performance at corner forward.
We headed for Carrignavar last Saturday in the U13 football league against St Colmcille’s and despite the home sides early dominance we knuckled down to lead 3-6 to 1-6 at the short whistle. 2 goals from the lively David Murphy and another from ace marksman Shay Rooney who was impressive throughout. We took over and produced a scintillating second half performance that yielded some fine scores with Shay completing his hat trick and points from Eoghan O’ Shea, Matthew Condon and Evan Courtney had us well clear at the finish 5-12 to 1-8.
Our U17 football second string headed to Mahon to take on St Michaels and came away with a very impressive win. Samuel O’ Driscoll donned the Goalkeepers geansaÍ for the first time and was a revelation, coolness personified in all that he surveyed, it was like he was a seasoned veteran in the position. Joshua Halpin scored goal number 1 finishing with aplomb as we led at the break 1-6 to 1-3. Ronan Devoy hit his second goal in 2 games with another composed finish and points from James O’ Donnell, Eoin Daly and the clinical James Hurley who struck 0-5 saw us winning on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-8. On a sour note, Seán Santos O’ Sullivan will be out for a few weeks after picking up a shoulder injury and we wish him all the best in his recovery.
The U17 premier 2 football team travelled to Carrigaline on the day the clocks moved forward but we never got moving and we were like time standing still as we came up against a really good home side who were far superior on the day. Substitute Stephen O’ Shea kicked our only goal of the game, and we did put some fine moves together to sore some wonderful points as the home side ran out convincing winners 4-16 to 0-9.
The second U15 football team got their league campaign up and running on Monday last with a home game against Carrigtwohill. This was an end-to-end game of football with not much between the sides as goals from Cian Moore and Josh McCarthy with quality finishes swung the game our way to leave the final score 3-11 to 0-10 in our favour. Top player on the day was the Finure man Ronan Norris.
Congratulations to Hannah Looney on the incredible achievement of winning all stars in both codes in 2021. The dual star double predicted on these pages last year and well deserved in a phenomenal year for the Aghada ace.
There were celebrations also for Aoife Healy who was player of the match as Cork beat Galway in the All-Ireland camogie final. Well done, Aoife a proud day for you, your family and Aghada camogie club.
The club are hosting a monster U8 football blitz next Saturday morning with teams from all over the county descending on Rostellan and the best of luck to all involved.
The best of luck to all our schools who are in sciath na scol hurling and camogie action this week.
