Juvenile GAA News
Hi folks, hope this newsletter finds you well and you enjoyed the St Patrick’s day festivities. The club was out in force in the well organised parade in Whitegate with the LGFA, camogie and juvenile boys’ sections being well represented and a big thankyou to the children, parents and coaches who participated with the green and white, the tricolour, the shamrock and the sunflower the national flower of Ukraine. Celebrated on the global stage this year the shamrock and the sunflower were side by side; we are lucky to be living in Ireland a country at peace and as St. Patrick was able to rid the country of some unwanted visitors hopefully in Ukraine, they can do the same.
The juvenile section was in hurling action last week with some impressive results, first up were our U15 premier 2 team who took on Blackrock. Adam Lewis was in inspired form between the sticks pulling off a series of impressive saves, Josh McCarthy was solid at full back with the half back trio of Cian Moore, Colm O’ Donoghue and Sam McAllister the launch pad of many attacks. Jude Devoy hit some nice points as Jack Dorney and Mattie O’ Leary billowed the Rockies net with well worked goals. Final score Aghada 2-20 Blackrock 0-11. Next up were our U17 premier 2 hurlers who avenged last years county final defeat against opponents Erin’s Own in Rostellans Forest field. The strong easterly wind blew out into the harbour and straight down the pitch making this a game of two halves. Playing with the wind in the first half the selectors decided to hammer the hammer with Fionn O’ Connor at centre forward and Hugh Mulcahy at full forward and it paid dividends immediately we went 3 points up before Hugh collected a high delivery to strike low to the net and with Noah Devoy 0-3 and Tomás Condon 0-2 scoring points, we were 1-8 to 0-3 up at half time. The second half we dug in playing into the teeth of the wind, Fionn O’ Callaghan was a colossus at full back with the half back line of Cian Hegarty, Seán O’ Callaghan and Aaron Kearns putting up the shutters to see us home on a score line of 1-12 to 1-6. Our U13 hurlers welcomed fellow East Cork team Fr O’ Neill’s to Rostellan last Saturday and came out on top in a close encounter with David Murphy scoring 2 goals and other green flags from John Dorney and Robbie Oosthuizen proving decisive in a 4-5 to 2-9 win that gets this group of players off to a fine start with the overall team performance that will be the most pleasing aspect for the management team.
The final game saw us entertain northside city team Na Piarsiagh on Sunday afternoon and what a humdinger it was, these sides had already played out a thrilling 3-9 each draw in football and this game proved equally as exciting nip and tuck and score for score all the way through before ace marksman John Walsh salvaged a draw at the end with the equalising point. James O’ Donnell in goals played well, while outside him the full back line of Ronan Devoy, Evan Crowley and Colm White were solid, Robert Dean excelled at centre back, the two James of Hurley and Motherway ran midfield, Seán Corkery was full of energy in the half forward line while inside him Ronan Walsh and the introduction of Finn Berry and Cian Murphy turned the tide in our favour as once again the sides could not be separated Aghada 2-12 Na Piarsiagh 3-9
The Go Games are up and running once again this weekend with our U9s, U10s and U11s out in football games while our U7s and U8s will also start their campaign the following weekend, with the action to continue right up until October alternating between hurling and football every weekend and the best of luck to all involved.
