Aghada Juvenile News
Hi folks, simple freedom came to mind to see the joy on the faces of our U8s as they were back on the pitch last Sunday morning after the winter break and being put through their paces under the watchful eye of academy coordinator John Connolly. The obstacle course that they were trying to negotiate was greeted with shrieks of excitement as they were pretending to be army rangers and super heroes, also on Sunday morning our U9 footballers were up on the 4G pitch at Pairc Uí Chaoimh and during the week our schools in our parish were playing challenge games with sciath na scol in mind and again the joy of just playing with their friends brought great joy to the boys and girls, we are lucky to be in this part of the world we live in, cherish the simple freedoms. Atrocious weather conditions were the main theme of the weekend and we still managed to get 3 games played with 3 being the magic number in 2 of them. First up were our U17 C-3 footballers who played in the white jerseys that turned a different colour in the treacherous underfoot conditions of our quarry field on Friday evening. The game with Na Piarsiagh ended in 3-9 apiece, a draw was a fair result, with Diarmuid Cotter proving to be a steady influence between the sticks as goals from Josh O’ Hailpin who finished superbly with a super shot after being set up by James Motherway and then celebrating in style and another from Ronan Devoy who billowed the net after a surging run from the 45m line and the third came from Seán O’ Callaghan with another exquisite finish as points from ace full forward James Hurley secured the share of the spoils as neither team deserved to lose.
Next up were our U13 footballers who came out on top by the narrowest of margins as the game finished in a deluge on our forest field last Saturday afternoon against Kiltha Óg. 2 goals from the prolific Robbie Oosthuizen and a well-executed penalty by Hugh O Lionsiagh left the half time score 3-3 to 3-1 in the away sides favour. The conditions worsened in the second half as our boys dug in and battled bravely and when the final whistle went, we were ahead 3-7 to 3-6 as the teams raced to the cover of the dressing rooms, soaked to the skin but it was the Aghada boys singing in the rain.
Sunday morning away in Mahon our U17 premier 2 footballers were unlucky to lose out against St Michaels in a game they were well capable of winning, the concession of 4 goals did not help our cause and despite this the overall good performance and the insatiable work rate will please the management team. Evan Crowley at corner back Seán O’ Callaghan around the middle Stevie O’ Shea in the full forward line along with James Motherway worked their socks off with Seánie Call drifting in from the sideline to send an unstoppable shot to the net. We were 2 points down at half time after playing with the wind and the selectors made an inspired call with James Hurley going from goalkeeping duties to full forward to give the team extra impetus and after 15 minutes we went 5 points up as we battled bravely only to come up just short on the final whistle 4 -4 to 2-9.
