Aghada Juvenile GAA News
Hi Folks, the excitement is at fever pitch in rebel land as Corks senior hurlers go in search of All Ireland honours. Will Croke Park be humming to the sounds of Limerick you’re a Lady and the cranberries or The Banks of my own lovely Lee and the Frank and Walters at around 5pm on Sunday, well by the time you read this then you will probably know “After All”.
The week got off to a fantastic start with the brilliant U20 All Ireland win a perfect beginning to the weeks journey its not often you can say a management team and players would be winning two All Irelands in less than six weeks and to top it off our own Fergal Rasper Condon was part of the journey, and like the rebel tide his stock is rising and shows no sign of abating as cork hurling looks to the future with confidence. The cork minor hurlers did the business on Saturday evening to dismantle Galway in a sensational display to add more Celtic crosses to the mantlepieces of cork and add more credence that this is a real Rebel Rising.
Our U12 hurlers were understrength for the trip to Kiltha Óg and lost to a far superior side on the day, despite this we can be proud of our lads who never gave up the ghost and kept battling to the end Kiltha Óg 4-11 Aghada 1-5.
Next up were our U15 Div 3 hurlers who made the long trip to Inniscarra for the second time in two days a profitable one, after winning there in football the day before. In a fine team performance we had strong showings all over the pitch with Rodger McGrath and Colm White tenacious in their defending and Seán O’ Brien surging forward at every opportunity the forwards were able to capitalise on the excellent ball they were receiving. Seán Corkery and Joe Connolly were playing blinders while inside them Emmet O’ Keeffe was causing the overworked Inniscarra defence all kinds of problems and was unlucky to see a rasping shot just clear the crossbar and such was the ferocity of the shot it would surely have blown a hole in the net. Jude Devoy scored a brace of goals and Jack Linehan added another as we ran out winners 3-24 to 2-4.
In the minor hurling league away in Ballynoe against St Catherines we overcame a very poor start to put ourselves right back in contention. We were 1-6 to 0-1 down before we started to hurl and to the lads credit battled back strongly to be in arrears 1-14 to 1-9 at the half time whistle despite losing the influential Lachlan Greig to a leg injury and we wish him all the best in his recovery. The highlight of the first half was the well executed goal by Eoin Motherway after superb team work reduced the deficit. The second half started well for the boys in green with white flags raised from Fionn O’ Connell, Shane Lewis and the unerring accuracy from placed balls by Motherway as he unearthed his inner Hoggie with a 100% record. More excellent points followed as we closed the gap and were then hit with a sucker punch at the death with a well taken goal for the home side that left the full time score in their favour 3-20 to 1-19 on a fantastic nights hurling that will auger well for both sides as they enter the championship.
U16 Football Match Report by John O’ Neill Aghada 2-13 St Finbarrs 5-10 Our U16 footballers travelled to Togher last Friday evening to take on the Barrs in the last group league game. The rain thankfully cleared before the throw in and Aghada opened the scoring with a point from Stevie O'Shea. The first quarter proved to be a tight affair with the teams going to the first water break at 3 points apiece with John Walsh also kicking a fine point. However the Barrs took control of the match in the 2nd quarter scoring 3 goals in that period, with their No10 proving too hot to handle. We were particularly unlucky not a score a goal ourselves before half time with Fionn O'Connor going on a fine run followed by a shot that rattled the upright. We went in at half time down 3-7 and 0-7 with Noah, Aaron and Oscar among the scorers. The Barrs never let up after half time adding a further 2 goals. Stevie tacked on another 2 points for us leaving the score at the final water break 5-9 to 0-9. But in fairness to our lads they went down fighting in the last quarter outscoring the Barrs 2-4 to 0-1 in that period, with the ever impressive Stevie O'Shea and John Walsh scoring 2 fine goals. Cian, Conor and Fionn O'Connor also kicked good scores before the final whistle. Plenty of positives on the night considering the way the lads saw out the game. Team and Scorers: Jack Dunne. Ronan Walsh, Fionn O'Callaghan, Conor Geary (0-1), Aaron Kearns (0-1), Fionn O' Connor (0-1), Noah Devoy (0-1), Cian Hegarty (0-1), Joshua Halpin, Oscar Slye (0-1), John Walsh (1-2), Stephen O'Shea (1-5), Diarmuid Cotter.
Our U12 footballers had a good win away to Carrigtwohill running out convincing winners on a scoreline of 2-4 to7-8 and also our U13 hurlers were again convincing winners away to Youghal 2-4 to 8-8 well done to all involved. The Go Games continue to excite with this being a hurling weekend, our U7s played away in Ballynoe against St Catherines, the U9s were in Cobh, the U10s in Cloyne against St Colmans while our U11s travelled to play Lisgoold with tremendous hurling on display by all concerned Ath Fhada Abú.
Disappointment for our U15 P1 hurlers who were in Féile action, 3 games played in a group format of 12 minutes a side with Midleton coming out on top in the group that also consisted of Killeagh and Youghal all teams were evenly matched that served up some humdingers with great excitement and fast open hurling. Well done to Midleton and we wish them all the best in the semi final.
