Aghada GAA Juvenile News week

Hi folks, we started off the games last week with a comprehensive home win in the U15 C3 hurling league against Ballinora. We were slow out of the blocks and gained momentum as the match developed, a half time scoreline of Aghada 1-4 Ballinora 0-2 did not tell the full story as we wasted many good scoring opportunities. This all changed in the second half as we clicked into gear and produced a sublime hurling performance to outgun our opponents. Jack Buckley performed well between the sticks, Jude Devoy struck some fine scores with the goals coming from Isaac Oosthuizen (2) Emmet O’ Keeffe and Cormac Walsh to run out winners 4-10 to 0-4 as the selectors used their full panel of players and will be very happy with the tremendous second half showing.

We then entertained Bride Rovers in the U18 Div 1 hurling league on a balmy Wednesday evening that produced some high quality passages of play. Rovers struck for an early goal and held that advantage right up to halftime leading on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-7. Aghada then struck the first point of the second half through the industrious centre forward Eoin Motherway but unfortunately that was as close as we got as our opponents put some fine scores together. Our half backline of Fionn O’ Connor, Jack Colbert and our best performer on the night Fionn O’ Callaghan kept hurling majestically as super sub Stephen O’ Shea found another super sub Sean Busteed and he billowed the net with a superb strike for a late consolation goal. The final score was Aghada 1-13 Bride Rovers 2-16. Down a few players on the night for various reasons, we can take the positives of which there were many into our next outing.

AGHADA U16 GROUP 2 HURLING V MALLOW report by Ben Walsh.

An unlucky result for the U16’s as they lost out by 2 points against a strong mallow team on Friday evening. The lads came flying out of the blocks with some quick fire points from Stevie O’Shea and Cian Hegarty to open up a 3 point lead. Stevie once again found some space up in the forward line and punished the Mallow defence with a beautiful goal. Mallow responded with a goal of their own and added a few points to reduce the scoreline. Fionn O’Connor, after a bursting run from the backline, striked a great point and Oscar Slye slotted over a lovely free to give Aghada a 1-7 to 1-3 lead at the first water break. Fionn O’Connor tried his luck again with a monster strike again from the back line. Some great battling from Ronan Walsh and Diarmuid allowed Stevie to find space and add another point. Diarmuids hard work paid off as he buried the ball into the back of the net to give Aghada some breathing space. That came back to haunt them as Mallow were able to level the game just before the half time whistle but another Oscar Slye free gave Aghada a 2-10 to 2-9 lead at half time. Oscar started the 2nd half with another well taken free after some terrific battling for the ball from John Walsh, Aaron Kearns and Fionn O’Callaghan. Aghada and mallow traded points up until the water break with the scores sitting at 2-13 to 2-12. The harsh heat caught up with aghada as they started to get pegged back by waves of Mallow attack. Oscar once again slotted over another free but Mallow turned up the pressure and added 1-6. Aghada were able to claim back 2 goals but in the end it wasn't enough to claim the victory on a glorious Friday evening for hurling. A brilliant game of hurling to watch for a neutral on the banks.

A tough day at the office for our premier U15 hurlers who succumbed to a heavy defeat to a cracking Sars outfit in Riverstown on Saturday. This match was played in searing heat as the early exchanges were fairly even before Sars scorched to victory. Aghada had plenty of possession early on, but this did not manifest itself on the scoreboard as we were guilty of some poor shooting that made an uphill task even harder. The halftime score read 2-9 to 0-4 in Sars favour despite some heroic defending from the backline and in particular Seán Santos O’ Sullivan. The second half saw Sars open up the Aghada defence much more easily, although great credit to our lads who never gave up the battle right to the end. The interesting thing about this group is that all four teams are level on 2 points apiece, with Glen Rovers having beaten Sars and then getting overturned by Midleton, so we now face into a must win match in our last game in the group away to Glen Rovers next Saturday, as they say all to play for. Aghada team & scorers: Jack Buckley, Colm O’ Donoghue, Seán Santos O’ Sullivan, Conor Baxx, Ronan Devoy, Hugh Mulcahy, Evan Crowley, David Wallace, Robert Dean, Samuel O’ Driscoll 0-1, Calum Roberts, James Hurley, Jude Devoy, Tomas Condon 0-1, James Motherway 0-5, subs used Jack Lenihan, Issac Oosthuizen, SeánOBrien,Eoin Daly.

The Thomas Kent annual commemoration takes place this Saturday 3pm in Rostellan. MC for the advent is local historian Charlie Hayes, music will be provided by James Walsh, as wreaths will be laid on the day in remembrance of times past of historical importance. Guest Speaker will be Rostellan resident and former Limerick native Damian Shiels. Damian is an author and historian who has published and lectured internationally on topics such as conflict archaeology, his previously published books include The Irish in the American Civil War and The Forgotten Irish, he has a PhD in conflict Archaeology, so anyone who can make it next Saturday are in for a very interesting experience.

Well done to Fergal Rasper Condon and the Cork U20 hurlers who produced a magnificent second half performance coming from six points down to put Tipperary to the sword and reach another Munster final. Congratulations to Diarmuid Phelan as the cork U20 footballers won their second Munster final in 3 years with a scintillating display against Tipperary. Diarmuid also got in on the goalscoring act with a fine surging run and a composed finish with his left leg, that has given him the bragging rights in the Phelan household for the time being at least in the battle of the full backs, over to you now Róisín!

The hardy boys from Aghada completed the 164km trek from Mizen to Ballin in memory of our beloved clubman Kieran as they cycled with him in their hearts and minds. Maith sibh a Bhuachaillí , Neart4dúinn
