Premier Intermediate Hurling League – Aghada 2-17 v St. Catherines 1-11; Rostellan, 8/3/2020

Aghada made it 2 league wins from 2 with a well deserved victory over St. Catherines last Sunday. A wintery downpour as the players warmed up (or tried to!) didn’t seem to affect the Aghada lads who with the wind at their backs took the game to their opponents from the word go. Impressive Charlie Terry opened the scoring in under a minute after taking a pass from the hard working Aaron Berry. John Looney was on the edge of the square for Aghada after a couple of years out with injuries and it was great to see him turn and point smartly for Aghada’s second score on 4 minutes. Next up Jamie O’Hanlon won possession on the ’45, turned his marker and raced all the way in on goal. A neat finish low to the ‘keepers right and Aghada were 1-2 to no score up after 7 minutes. 4 more points followed quickly - a Will Leahy free, 2 more from play from Cha, and a second for Looney which easily could have been a goal as well. 1-6 to no score before Catherine’s open their account on 15 minutes with a point. Tim Hartnett who played well at half back set up Leahy for point number 7. Terry, Leahy and a fine score on the run from Cain Fleming with just a point in reply from the visitors gave Aghada an 11 point lead as the short whistle approached. Catherines rallied however and hit 1-1 in under a minute to give themselves a foothold in the contest. Not for long however as Aghada hit 1-2 in the closing 3 minutes. Fleming and Will with the points and Jamie with his second goal after being well set up by brother Kevin. 2-12 v 1-3 at the interval and even allowing for the wind, Aghada were in a great position after playing some great hurling. Ciaran O’Shea in the Aghada goals even had two assists in that half with 2 perfectly flighted balls for Terry to latch onto.

On resumption, the 1st half pattern continued. Aghada hit 4 unanswered points in the opening 9 minutes, 3 from Will and Looney with his 3rd. That was as good as it got for Aghada, who lost their way a bit from here to the finish. As conditions worsened, St Catherines took charge of proceedings. They hit the next 6 scores of the game between the 10th and 25th minutes. The pick of which was a sublime sideline cut. But with Ed Leahy, David Rice and Mark Healy in no mood to give ground, it never really looked like the Aghada lead would be overhauled. Aghada’s next and final score was a lovely Fleming strike off the hurley on 27 minutes. St Catherine’s tagged on two more frees, but at the final whistle Aghada were victorious on a 2-17 v 1-11 scoreline.

Junior Football Div 4 – Aghada 4-14 v Lisgoold 1-7; Rostellan 9/03/2020

Our 3rd adult football team had a big league win against Lisgoold in Rostellan on Monday night. Aghada had the wind at their backs for the opening half and Aghada were on the front foot from the minute go. Cian O’Driscoll and Oisin Counihan were on fire up front. The 1st goal saw Darren Malone lob the Lisgoold ‘keeper. Stephen Murphy is back with a bang and a fine point from centre back, while alongside him in the half back line, Sean Byrne continued his rich vein of form with another point from play. The pick of the scores from the 1st half was from young Vincent Rohan, with a sublime point off the outside of his right boot. O’Driscoll had another major for Aghada to leave the half time score – 2-11 to 0-03 to the home side. Against the wind for the second half, Malone and Tim O’Regan dropped back as sweepers and kept control on the game for Aghada. Ben Walsh and Sean Óg O Keeffe both impressed when introduced in the second half. Walsh scoring a fine goal for a rampant Aghada outfit. Following in the great Peter Canavan’s boots, Counihan was taken off for a short rest. It worked a treat as when re-introduced he banged 1-1 to cap off a fine individual performance. In the end Aghada were comprehensive 4-14 v 1-7 winners. Drico just pipping Stephen Murphy to the man of the match award!.
