J.B. football Championship Aghada 3-9 v Glanmire 0-4; Lisgoold 23/5/19
A good 1st round win for our JB football team last Thursday when they were comfortable winners over Glanmire. Michael Russell opened the scoring with a point from play, which was quickly cancelled out by a like score from Glanmire on 7 minutes. Next up came Aghada’s first goal. Alan Hogan ran in along the endline, his pass was flicked on by Russell to the waiting Niall Hill, who finished low to the Glanmire net. 3 minutes later Aghada had another green flag. This time a Hogan penalty after he had himself been dragged down. Luke O’Connell fielded the kickout and set up Marcus Leahy for a fine point and it was all Aghada now. Andy O’Donoghue came up from goals to point 2 frees, with a ’45 from Glanmire the only response before the short whistle. So 2-4 to 0-2 at the break put Aghada in a commanding lead. The rain themed down at the start of the 2nd half, and while Glanmire opened the scoring, Aghada’s 1st score of this half put the game to bed. Hogan gathered the ball out on the sideline 50 metres from goal. And off he went. When he got to the 21 metre line he unleashed an unstoppable strike which flew in just under the crossbar to the top right corner for Aghada’s third goal. From there out the result was never in doubt, with the Aghada defence, in which Cal Bawden and Aaron Butler particularly impressed, always in control. We had a reeling in the years moment on 52 minutes with Stevie Keeffe putting Brian Morrissey through for a fine score, and Andy kicked 2 more dead balls to help Aghada to a well-deserved victory. Aghada Team and scorer – Andy O’Donoghue, Richie Condon, David Rice, Aaron Butler, Cal Bawden, Mark Healy, Conor Maloney, Marcus Leahy (0-1), John Connolly, Niall Hill(1-1), Brian Morrissey (0-2), Tim O’Regan, Luke O’Connell, Michael Russell(0-1), Alan Hogan(2-0, 1-0 pen). Super 11’s U21 hurling tournament
The second hosting of our Super 11’s tournament will take place using all 3 pitches in Rostellan from 11am to 5:30pm on Bank Holiday Monday the 3rd of June. This is an 11 a side competition with rolling subs and along with some other differences the main one is that only goals count, so plenty of goal mouth action is guaranteed. This was a great event last year with Fr. O'Neills defeating Sarfields in a high scoring finale. Midleton, Cloyne, Carrigtwohill and St. Catherines are some of the clubs taking part this year. So hopefully another feast of hurling will be on display in Rostellan. Please come out and support on the day.
