Aghada’s 3rd football team made the long trek to Glenville for their opening game in the East Cork Junior C championship last Wednesday night. 18 players togged on the night and if that was a good start, things got even better just after the throw in. 2 very quick goals from Callum Fletcher and Vince Rohan settled the team into their stride. With Mark Healy, Ronnie Power and Mike Morrissey excelling at the back, Aghada took an early grip on proceedings. Darren Malone and Aaron Stafford also won the midfield battle and both kicked two fine points. Upfront Jack Hayes was proving himself to be a very effective target man at full forward and with Sean Morrissey kicking two points also, this helped Aghada to a 2-7 v 0-3 interval lead.
The home side were much improved on the restart, and laid siege to the Aghada goal at the beginning of the second half. Contrary to some scurrilous reports on social media, the returning Jack Farmer in goals for Aghada did not concede 3 goals from 2 shots. In fact Aghada were grateful to Farmer for a fine stop early in the 2nd period to deny Glenville any real momentum on the scoreboard. With Morrissey, Stafford and Malone all adding their 3rd points, Aghada lifted the siege somewhat. 2nd half subs Aiden Kelleher, Jack McDonald and Declan Morrissey all made an impact and with Mark Healy surging forward to kick a fine score from centre back, Aghada remained in control. Kelleher ( who earlier that day, had pleaded for an old, less tight set of jerseys to be used) almost popped his shoulder in a tackle and Farmer was blown clean out over the sideline by a Glenville shoulder, but other than that, Aghada were winning most of the physical battles. Late points from William Guiry and Jack Hayes sealed a good win. Best on the night were Jack Hayes, Jack Farmer, Darren Malone, Sean Morrissey and Aaron Stafford.
