Match report
Rebel Og East Minor A Football Championship Qtr. Final
Aghada Vs Canovee Tuesday 18th Sept. Pairc Ui Chaoimh 4G
After a 1st round win away to Glenville the Aghada team travelled to
Pairc Ui Chaoimh to take on Canovee. The West cork team’s reputation
preceded them as they had not lost a match in any competetion this season.
True to form Canovee came out of the blocks quickly and Aghada struggled
to contain their forwards in early play. The wide open spaces of the 4G pitch
were suiting the opposition players better than the lads in the all white strip.
Alan Hogan scored a vital goal for Aghada to keep us in touch and moments
later Ivan Merz made an important save to deny Canovee a goal which would
have stretched their lead. Aghada were struggling to win any ball from kick-outs
as Canovee made repeated attacks on the Aghada defence. At the break Canovee
led by 3pts and the Aghada outfit had plenty of thinking to do before retaking
the field.
From the get go Aghada came out all guns blazing in the second half and
within 10 minutes they drew level and then forged ahead of Canovee with
some clever points and a timely goal from Daniel McGauran. Aghada
players were winning ball all over the pitch with Diarmuid Phelan and
Mark McCarthy dominating possesion in the middle of the field.
Jamie O’Hanlon keep the pressure on with some timely points while the
sizable Aghada contingent roared their support from the Pairc Ui Chaoimh
stands. With 10 minutes to play Canovee started to work their way back
into the match and suddenly they were only 3 points down with momentum
on their side. Some big clashes ensued with Aghada players putting bodies
on the line with some desperate defending. With minutes remaining Aghada
broke out of defence and Alan Hogan put Craig Healy through one on one
with the Canovee keeper. The resulting goal saw the match finish on a score
line of Aghada 3-9 Canovee 0-12. A great fighting result for Aghada who now
march on to meet Inniscarra in the semi final.
