U21 East Cork A Football County 1st Round - Aghada 3-13 v St Michaels 1-6
Our U21 footballers successfully negotiated the 1st round of the County Championship last Saturday night when they had a comprehensive victory over St. Michaels from Blackrock. Played in Pairc Ui Rinn an early goal from Cork minor captain, Diarmaid Phelan, helped settled Aghada into the game. St Michaels who were beaten in the semi-final of the city championship by Douglas, were more than a match for Aghada in this opening period, and by half time had levelled proceedings at 1-5 apiece. There was nothing in the opening 15 minutes of the 2nd half to suggest Aghada were heading for a convincing win, although the East Cork champions did open up a 3 point lead in this period. Then on 18 minutes Luke O’Connell goaled and this pushed the Aghada team into top gear. With Jordan Tynan outstanding at centre back, and Kyle O’Shea impressing also at corner back, Aghada took complete control. Just as in the East Cork final, Kevin O’Hanlon started to run the show for Aghada upfront. And with Daniel Creedon popping over some lovely points, Aghada put solid distance between themselves and Michael’s on the scoreboard. Aghada continued to play some impressive football and the result was never in doubt long before O’Hanlon kicked Aghada’s third goal in the dying seconds. This competition will probably stall now until after the leaving cert, so it’s likely the end of June before we will play again. Congrats to all involved in this great win.

East Cork Junior A football Championship - Aghada 2-7 v Midleton 2-13
No joy for our 2nd football team as our Junior A’s lost out to Midleton in this year’s 1st round. Played in Castlemartyr last Thursday night, Midleton led from start to finish. At half time they led by 5 points on a 1-5 v 0-3 scoreline. Still a relatively inexperienced Aghada team hung in there, thanks mainly to the player on the pitch with no shortage of experience Pearse O’Neill, who dominated the midfield exchanges and kicked 5 points to boot. David Rice and Ben Stafford were also playing well for Aghada. A Stephen Daly goal, helped keep Aghada in touch and with 10 to play, it was a 4 point game. Then however, Midleton kicked for home, scoring 1-4 in this time and with time almost up it was 2-13 v 1-9 in their favour. Ray Savage got Aghada a consolation goal right at the death, and we now play the back door game on Saturday coming against Castlelyons.

Upcoming Events
Two upcoming events - Firstly the launch of the East Cork Harbour Marathon will take place in our grounds in Rostellan on Sunday June the 10th from 1pm to 2pm. There will be a Volcano Wood-fired Pizza oven dishing out food to everyone and Cork’s 96fm crew will also be in attendance. All who have generously volunteered helping out this great event over the last 2 years are especially invited down for the hour as a thank you for your help, hopefully ongoing help, with the Marathon and other races. Everyone is welcome on the day.
Secondly we need everyone to channel their inner Anna Geary, or Marty Whelan or even Dessie Cahill!!! As we are currently looking for members from across all 4 sections of the club who would you be interested in taking on a new Fun Filled challenge this autumn.
What Is It? - We need a minimum of 24 people who could commit to a couple of hours for classes on a Wednesday night from mid-September to mid-January to learn the finer points of dancing, all of this culminating with a Grand Finale in the Radisson Blu Hotel on Friday 18th January 2018. So if you want to try something different, have some fun, and keep fit and toned for the Christmas parties!, than let any member of the committee know that you are interested.
