Premier Intermediate Hurling league –  Aghada 1-8 v Tracton 0-10; Minane Bridge, 18/4/2017

Aghada travelled to Minane Bridge short a number of regulars for their second league game of 2018 and came away with their 1st brace of points for 2018.  In what was a low scoring contest, Aghada hit a lot of wides in the opening half and were also grateful to Trevor O’Keeffe in goals who made a couple of excellent saves during this period. At half time it was 5 points to 4 in favour of the home side. Aghada improved in the second half. The full back line was solid throughout, with Ger Melvin also sweeping up a lot of ball. Jack McDonald played very well at midfield, while up front Charlie Terry was doing most of the damage on the scoreboard. The young forward hit 1-7 in total, 1-1 from play and with Kevin O’Hanlon also coming into it as the game wore on, Aghada were good value for their one point victory.

Aghada Team and scorers – Trevor O’Keeffe, Tim Hartnett, Jake O’Donoghue, Aiden O’Connell, Billy Hennessy, Ger Melvin, David Rice, Jack McDonald (0-1), Jordan Tynan, Luke O’Connell, Charlie Terry (1-7,0-6f), Tommy O’Donoghue, Kevin O’Hanlon, Mathew Leahy, Richie Condon. Subs Used – Aaron Berry, Ger Lynch.

Premier Intermediate Hurling league –  Aghada 1-10 v Valley Rovers 6-23; Brinny, 22/4/2017

Our hurlers 2nd league game in 4 days came on Sunday last with a trip to Brinny and it’s a game best forgotten quickly from Aghada’s point of view. The game was well over as a contest by half time, with the home side leading on a 3-17 v 1-4 scoreline. Things improved only slighty after the break, but Rovers remained the better team throughout and ran out very comfortable winners 6-23 v 1-10. Hard to draw positives with championship v O’Neills on the horizon, but Aghada can be happy to see Michael Russell return from a long term knee injury, while young Charlie Terry continues his rich vein of form amassing a personal 1-8 tally on an otherwise difficult day for Aghada.

Aghada Team and scorers – Trevor O’Keeffe, Tim Hartnett, Michael Russell, Aiden O’Connell, Billy Hennessy, Jack McDonald, David Rice, Stephen O’Keeffe, Jordan Tynan, Tommy O’Donoghue, Charlie Terry (1-8, 1-6 f), Brian Morrissey, David O’Hanlon, Daniel Creedon(0-1), Aaron Stafford (0-1). Subs Used Ciaran O’Shea, Ronan Kennedy, Ger Melvin, Matt Leahy, Richie Condon, Declan Foley, Luke O’Connell.

Fixtures

It’s hurling championship weekend as we return to Premier Intermediate hurling championship for 2018. Our opponents are East Cork rivals Fr. O’Neills. These sides have met twice in championship in recent years, with both sides claiming one victory. Aghada are sweating on a number of injuries and all support will be gratefully received in Killeagh next Saturday. The very best of luck to all involved.

It seems a while ago now since our u21’s qualified for the East Cork Final in dramatic fashion. This game is now set for 11th of May against a Glenville outfit that soundly beat us in the opening round robin game. More on this fixture in coming weeks.

Denis O’Sullivan’s  Musuem and G.A.A. Exhibition

On Sunday the 22nd of April Denis O’Sullivan from Ballynoe brought his incredible collection of G.A.A. Memorabilia to Aghada. On display was an extensive collection of photo albums which included hurling and camogie teams from all grades from many decades and from all corners of the country. There was a large collection of recordings of Hurling and Camogie on audio cassettes, CD’s and D.V.D. Everyone who called to the community centre throughout the day enjoyed their visit and browsing through the items on view

On the day, our chairman Jimmy O’Leary along with Anthony Aherne, presented Denis with an Aghada Jersey from our special “Billy Aherne” set of jerseys.  This jersey will now be added to Denis’s collection and will be on display for all his future exhibitions. Best of luck to Denis for the future.
