Senior Football League Div 4 – Aghada 0-9 v Glenville  0-6; Rostellan 11/2/18

Our first ever league game on the new forest pitch, saw our senior football team make it 2 wins out of two in this years league after a 3 point victory over East Cork rivals Glenville. This pitch has been developed to be playable in all weather conditions and this was certainly put to the test last Sunday. A sustained hail and snow shower left the place completely white just minutes before throw in. But still the underfoot conditions were excellent when the game commenced at 2:30 pm. Aghada started the better and virtually owned possession in the opening 10 mins. Nothing was clicking upfront however and a point from wing back Aaron Berry was the only score Aghada had to show for this dominance. Glenville grew into the game and kicked 2 points in as many minutes to lead after 12 minutes. Pearse O’Neill, as usual, took the game by the scruff and kicked 2 points on minutes 14 and 15. The second came after a strong run from defence by Kalen O Donoghue. These points spurred on his teammates and Aghada hit the next 3 scores as well. Cian Fleming  hit one from a free and one from play and then John Looney kicked a fine long distance point to give Aghada a 6 v 2 lead after 22 minutes. Glenville completed the 1st half scoring with a fine strike of their own on 25 minutes and went in at the break 3 down, but knowing they would have the wind for the second half.

It was a 2 point game 5 minutes after the restart, when Glenville pointed a free. Aghada then converted 2 placed balls of their own through Fleming, with Marcus Leahy and O’ Neill drawing the fouls. Midway through the half the sides exchanged points, Glenville from play, a Fleming free for Aghada after being fouled himself. On 17 minutes Glenville pointed another free. That made the score line 9 v 6 in Aghada’s favour and neither side would trouble the scoreboard for the rest of the contest. In truth apart from an important save from Andy O’Donoghue on 20 minutes, not much else of note happened to keep the spectators warm. Still Aghada held on comfortably for the win and now have maximum points from their opening 2 games. Jake O’Donoghue at full back and Aiden O’Connell at wing back were others that impressed on the day.
