Championship campaigns are now in full swing across all our age groups, with plenty of exciting matches and great performances to report. Here’s a quick round-up of how each team is getting on so far:
U18 Div1 Hurling. Our U18 hurlers have battled hard in their opening three championship fixtures, but unfortunately came up short against Bride Rovers, Watergrasshill, and Kiltha Óg. (Bride Rovers1-30 Aghada 0-12, Watergrasshill 2-16 Aghada 0-15, Kiltha Óg 2-18 Aghada 0-16) Each game saw strong first-half showings, but the opposition’s second-half surge proved decisive. Two fixtures remain in the group stage — a tough home clash against table-toppers Killeagh on 27th August, followed by an away game against Lisgoold on 10th September.
U18 Div 1Football. The footballers started their campaign with a narrow one-point defeat to Erin’s Own in a hard- fought opener (Erin’s Own2-09, Aghada0-14) followed by a well-earned win over Kiltha Óg last week (Kiltha Óg 0-06 Aghada 0-11). Their next challenge is at home to Killeagh on 20th August. Two more fixtures await after that — against Midleton and Glenville — with everything still to play for.
U16 Div2 Hurling. Our U16 hurlers capped off a fantastic league campaign by winning the Division 2 final on 14th July, overcoming Killeagh in a thrilling, goal-filled contest.( Aghada 6-11 Killeagh 1-13) In their opening championship game last Monday, they fell to a strong Carrigtwohill side on a 3-13 to 2-21 scoreline, first-half wides proved costly, but a strong Aghada performance with some fine battling leaving a lot learnt and a lot to build on. Next up is a highly anticipated rematch against Killeagh on 25th August in Rostellan — the visitors will be eager to overturn that league final result, so a good game guaranteed !
U16 Div1 Football The U16 footballers opened their Division 1 campaign away to St Colman’s in Cloyne last week. Despite a determined effort, they couldn’t recover from the home side’s four goals. (St Colman’s 4-04 Aghada 1-08) Next up are three big fixtures against St Colmcilles, St Nicholas, and Glenville, all of which should deliver competitive and entertaining football.
U15 Hurling & Football The hurlers started well with a great win over Bishopstown last Wednesday (Aghada 6-16Bishopstown 0-09) and face Youghal away on the 19th. The footballers first match is away to St. Finbarrs on the 21st and as part of a 3 team group, all to play for and a few good upcoming matches.
U14 Hurling Our Division 4 U14 hurlers have enjoyed a fantastic championship run so far, winning 4 out of their 5 matches.( Kiltha Óg 3-0 Aghada 5-02, Bishopstown 1-03 Aghada 4-05, Erin’s Own 2-02 Aghada 1-08, Nemo rangers 1-02 Aghada 3-09, Eire Óg 2-11 Aghada 0-02) Each game has showcased some fine hurling and great teamwork. With just two fixtures left — against Mallow and Watergrasshill — this group continues to grow stronger with every outing.
Division 1 It’s been a tougher championship for our Division 1 hurlers, who suffered three early defeats in May & June. However, they bounced back in style with a brilliant 3-17 to 0-11 victory over Killeagh on the Quarry Field on Thursday night. The match was packed with determined play and skilful hurling, proving this team is gaining strength as the campaign progresses and with Killeagh & Erin’s Own yet to play to decide the final standings of this group.
U14 P2 Football: The P2 side have played three matches so far, winning one against St Michaels 2-06 2-09 and losing to Kinsale & Carrigtwohill. They now prepare for their final group game against Glenville on 24th August.
Division 4 Football: Our Division 4 team have also played three matches, recording fine wins over Erin’s Own (Aghada 1-12 Erin’s Own 2-07) and Kiltha Óg. Their last group game is also against Glenville, with all to play for table placings.
U13 Football Our U13 footballers are continuing their excellent season after a perfect run of 6 wins from 6 in the opening group stage. They are now competing in Phase 2, where they have played four matches, winning three and drawing one. Their campaign began with a long trip west to Castlehaven, returning home with a great victory (Castlehaven 1-06 Aghada 6-10). This was followed by a four-point win over Kinsale, a hard fought draw in Crosshaven 2-05 Aghada 1-08 and recent a good win at home against Kilshannig 3-07 Aghada 5-09. Their final two fixtures in this phase will be against Cobh and Kilmacabea. The team continues to show fine footballing skills, improving from game to game, and will be aiming to carry this momentum forward to more success.
U12 Hurling & Football
Our U12s are also progressing well in both their hurling and football league campaigns. The footballers had a good opening win against Erin’s Own but lost to St. Colmans recently and have 2 more upcoming games against Fr.O Neills and St. Dominics. The hurlers started with a draw away to Ballygiblin followed by a loss to Bride Rovers, and have three remaining games. With plenty more fixtures still to come in both hurling and football, this group will have lots of opportunities to continue developing and building on their strong performances.
The U12s also took part in our annual Willie Ryan U-12 Hurling Tournament that took place at the end of June. Aghada reached the Cup Final, where they were narrowly beaten by a strong Castlelyons side. It was a fantastic day of hurling in the club, enjoyed by players, coaches, and supporters alike and a special thanks to all involved in making this special occassion. The focus now turns to our Billy Ahern Football Tournament in September, which promises to be another great occasion.
GoGames & U11s
All our other juvenile teams U6, U7, U8 continue to enjoy regular matches as part of their GoGames campaigns each weekend. Both our U9’s and U11 got to play in Páirc Uí Chaoimh recently, with our U11’s having the incredible opportunity to take part in the Munster GAA Activities days in both hurling and football. They played against teams from across Cork and Munster, and also enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium — including the gym and dressing rooms. Memorable days out for the boys, and a fantastic chance to experience playing on the hallowed turf.
Cúl Camp 2025
And finally, a special mention must go to our hugely successful Cúl Camp, which ran from the 14th to 18th July. This week is one of the most important dates in our juvenile calendar for so many and a time for fun, friendship, and developing new skills. A massive thank you goes to all the young coaches from our club who gave their time to help out, as well as our dedicated volunteer coordinators Helen, Úna, and Niamh, and head coach Rachel, whose commitment and energy were key to the camp’s success. We are also very grateful to our sponsors: Irving Oil, for providing the fire truck engine, which brings so much excitement to our Fun Friday, the ice cream truck kindly sponsored by the juvenile club, SuperValu Midleton, who kindly sponsor fruit for the camp each year, Energie Fitness, Midleton for supplying treats and drinks for our coaches. This year’s camp welcomed 200 children, all enjoying a fantastic week packed with activities. Once again, it would not have been possible without the hard work of the many volunteers working behind the scenes. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved for making it another wonderful Cúl (Cool) Camp!
Best of luck to all our teams in their remaining Championship campaigns!
