U16 East Div 1 Football League Aghada 1-08 St. Michaels 1-07 (report by Jack Norris 24/3/24)
On Sunday our U16s travelled up to Mahon to take on St. Michaels in a tightly contested game with both defences on top in a low-scoring cagey affair. We got off to a great start with our stand in keeper Eoghan O’ Shea very composed and getting away all his short kickouts, Eoghan Walsh was doing trojan work at the back while up front Shay Rooney was showing very well as we went 3 points up through the boot of Cian Moore and Tom Walsh but St. Michaels came roaring back into it and knocking over 4 unanswered points. We finished well with some strong tackling around the centre of the field from Kaylan Cunningham leading to a lot of turnovers as well as Tom Walsh making powerful runs up the centre of the field and knocking over the final point of the half to tie up the game at four all come half time.
St. Michaels got off to a flying start in the second half knocking over a free and then came the first major of the game when a ball over the top was poked into the back of the net by the St. Michaels forward. It could have gone from bad to worse when we turned over possession in the middle of the park and Michaels broke at pace a second goal looked imminent if not for an excellent last ditch tackle from Josh McCarthy. This had given Aghada the lift that was needed as from then on we started to up the intensity this was evident from the back 6 with Eoghan Walsh, Jamie Sweeney and Cillian Burke intercepting every ball that was being kicked inside while the half back line of Cillian Scanlon, Sam Mcallister and Josh McCarthy were beginning to thunder forward more often. A high ball into the square had caused huge problems from the Michaels defence when Cormac Crowley in his new found position broke in behind and latched onto the ball and cooly went around the keeper and dispatched the ball into the back of the net. The sides traded scores and coming down the final straight were level. Good work from Will O’ Mahony, Sam McAllister and Josh McCarthy had allowed us to earn a free for Cian Moore who duly obliged and stuck over the final score of the game as we closed out the game to give us our first win of the campaign by a solitary point.
Team on the day: Eoghan O’ Shea, Jamie Sweeney, Eoghan Walsh, Cillian Burke, Cormac Crowley (1-0), Sam McAllister, Josh McCarthy , Kalyan Cunningham, Tom Walsh (0-2), Will O’ Mahony, Cian Moore (0-4,) Jake Morrissey, Shay Rooney (0-2), Jack Mulcahy, Robbie Oosthuizen. Subs used Cillian Scanlon, Peter Mulcahy, Seán O’ Reilly.
