A Chairde,

Bliain nua atá ann agus tá súil againn go mbeidh an-craic eadrainn i mbliana.

GAA season is very much back in full swing and isn’t it great to see our fantastic facilities in Rostellan full of life and a hive of activity. Let’s hope we can look forward to a full year of GAA activity for the first time since 2019!

Congratulations:

Firstly, we start off the year with a few congratulations.

Eoin O’Neill has been appointed as Imokilly senior football manager for 2022. Eoin has a great passion for the Gaelic Athletic Association and we’ve no doubt that he will bring this passion and energy to the role. Best of luck to Eoin, his backroom team and all the candy stripes for the year ahead.

Next up, Brian Walsh who is so heavily involved in our club who has been appointed to Keith Ricken’s Cork senior football backroom team. Best of luck to Brian and all involved for the year ahead.

On the hurling front, congrats and best of luck to Fergal Condon who is selector again for the Cork U20 hurlers. Hopefully Rasper and the team can make it 3 All Irelands in a row for the Cork 20s in this competition.

On the playing front, congrats to Rachel and Sarah Leahy on being selected on the Cork senior football team. Congrats to Ali Smith who represents our club on the Cork Senior Camogie team. Also, well done to Kaitlin Smith and Abigail Ring who join Rachel on the Cork minor football team. Finally, well done to Aoife Healy who represents Aghada on the Cork Minor Camogie team.

Rebels Bounty:

Rebels Bounty was a wonderful success for our club in 2021. This draw was critical to our fundraising efforts last year especially with Covid severely impacting other fundraising activities. It enabled the club to upgrade the club gym and security system whilst also helping us to finance the cost of maintaining our wonderful facilities in Rostellan. The pitches were cut over 100 times and over 190 bags of fertiliser were spread on the grass. This highlights just a few areas where the funds raised from Rebels Bounty helped the club. The upkeep and maintenance of our facilities in Rostellan has helped ensure our wonderful mentors can continue to provide top class coaching, recreation and most importantly a bit of fun to everyone in the club. I think it is fair to say we probably didn’t appreciate how much we took all these activities for granted until the pandemic hit. To maintain our wonderful facilities and equipment in Rostellan it is vital that we keep funds coming through the door of the club. So again, this year the club has placed a big emphasis on using the Rebels Bounty as one of the main fundraisers for the running and maintenance of our club. The great news is the club has reached its quota set by the Cork County Board which means that 100% of all ticket sales go directly to Aghada GAA from here on in. There has been wonderful support so far across the community for the draw and Aghada GAA are deeply thankful for this.

Join now online at https://gaacork.ie/rebelsbounty/ , contact Rebels Bounty draw coordinator John Motherway, PRO Vince Rohan on 0851938088 or any club officer. There is also a Direct Debit Option available where you pay €10 for ten months and get 2 months free.

When buying your ticket online please make sure to select AGHADA GAA as your chosen club.

For anyone who hasn’t signed up for the draw the closing date for both online and direct debit sales is 6PM on Thursday the 24th of February.

There are twelve monthly draws with 30 must be won cash prizes each month. A whopping 1st prize of either €20K, €25K or €100K depending on the month. Aghada GAA Rebels Bounty members will also be entered into an additional draw with a prize fund of €1,000.

Our club lotto was won again recently where Vince Rohan (Yes Me!) walked away with €12,750. With over €71,000 given away since the relaunch of our club lotto, it is definitely worth entering our lotto (trust me!) and don’t be afraid to recommend it to any of your friends or family!

Fixtures:

Last week the draws were completed for the premier intermediate football championship and the intermediate hurling championship.

We have been handed a tough hurling group with 2 East Cork derbies coming up against Midleton and Lisgoold. We will also face up against city side Blackrock in the other group game. A hard group but there’s no doubt Willie Wallis and his charges will be relishing the challenge. Have a read of a nice article from John Cashman in discussion with Willie in the Echo https://www.echolive.ie/corksport/arid-40792509.html

In the football championship we have also been handed a challenging group. A group that looks extremely similar to the last two years where we will face up against both Castletownbere and Na Piarsaigh again. The new team to this group is Bantry Blues who have been relegated to Premier Intermediate this year from Senior A last year. No doubt this group will be very tough, but Philip Moore and his team will be hoping to draw on last years progress and hopefully end the year with some silverware.

This year’s league fixtures have been released. Our premier intermediate footballers get their season underway on Sunday the 5th of March at 12pm in Rostellan Vs Na Piarsaigh. Our intermediate hurlers get their season underway on the 27th of March against Lisgoold in Rostellan.

Be sure to get out and support the lads.

Our Junior footballers played the first match of the season for the adult club on Sunday against Dungourney in Rostellan. There was some nice football on display and a special mention goes to Ronan Murphy and Cian O’Shea who made their adult debuts for the club. Well done lads.

Below is a picture of the team that played Vs Dungourney on Sunday last.

Our Junior teams will also be getting their league campaigns up and running shortly. Fixture details will follow when available.

Keep an eye on social media and aghadagaa.com for all upcoming fixtures over the coming weeks.
