U21 East Cork Final

Our U21 footballers are back in familiar territory as they contest another East Cork final on Friday night against Glenville. This will be the sides second meeting and when they met in the 1st round robin game of this year’s competition, Glenville ran out comfortable winners. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, so Aghada will be hoping for a much better showing and to hopefully turn the tables and retain the trophy for another year. The game is on in Midleton at 7:45pm, so go along and support on the night. Best of luck to all involved.

Congrats and Hard Luck

Congrats to Diarmaid Phelan, who led his County out as captain in minor football championship against Kerry last Tuesday night. A draw was the very least Cork deserved on the night, but alas Kerry hit a point in injury time to win the game. So hard luck to Diarmaid and his team mates, but well done also, you did us proud.

Super 11’s Hurling is coming to Aghada

Mark the date in your diary – 19th of May 2018, the birth of the East Cork Super 11’s U21 hurling tournament. The brainchild of our U21 hurling manager Trevor O’Keeffe, some of East Cork’s best U21 hurling teams have been invited to take part where goals will be the only show in town.

Midleton, Erins Own, Sarsfields, Fr. O’Neills, Castlelyons, Carrigtwohill, Aghada and guests from the South East Ballinhassig are the teams taking part. 2 groups of 4 teams will play 3 round robin matches and then at least one more game – either the semi final proper or the plate semi-final. The event will take place using all 3 pitches in Rostellan from 11am to 5:30pm and a great feast of hurling will be on display. Teams are made up of 11 players (obviously!) with rolling substitutions taking place and only goals count, with the location the goals are scored from deciding whether the score is worth 3 or 5 points. So a bit like Johnny Sull, they’ll need to know how to find the Onion bag in a big way! So it will all make for great entertainment.

The draw for the groupings took place in Rostellan on bank holiday Monday last. Aghada chairman Jimmy O’Leary welcomed player representatives from Midleton – Cormac Beausang, and Fr. O’Neills – Ger Mellerick and John Looney from Aghada. The two visiting players then made the draw on the night which was overseen by County Board officer Ronan Dwane. The following were the groups drawn on the night – Group 1 – Midleton, Ballinhassig, Carrigtwohill, and Aghada; Group 2 – Sarsfields, Fr. O’Neills, Erins Own and Castlelyons.

As Trigger rightly says, Aghada have a proud record for hosting new events such as this, the famed Willie Ryan Tournament and our East Cork Harbour marathon come readily to mind. But as with all these events, help will be needed on the day. If you can be available to help out in any way, please contact Trevor on 086 2748797. Come down and support the event in any case.

Best of luck to all involved in this innovative and proactive idea and lets all get behind it.

Tómas Kent Commemoration, 12th May, Rostellan

Our clubs will have a big presence at this year’s annual Tómas Kent Commemoration, which takes place at 4pm on the 12th of May. Donal Walsh will be MC, while the oration on the day will be given by his brother James, of Goldfish Syndrome fame, so he might also give a song on the day. Also on display will be the County Intermediate Cup and the junior All-Ireland ladies football cup won by Aghada last year. The county senior hurling cup won by Imokilly will also be present. Aghada’s hurling captain, John Paul O’Connor will lay a wreath in memory of Fenian Denis Kelly, who was the founder of Aghada GAA back in 1885. All are welcome on the day.
