Fixture: U16A Championship
Teams: Aghada V Charleville
Venue: Rostellan Pitch
Date: Tuesday 12th September 2017
The Play: Aghada welcomed Charleville to Rostellan for the 1st round of the U16A camogie championship. There was a gale of wind blowing up the pitch towards the clubhouse. These were very testing conditions for both teams. Aghada played the first half with the aid of the wind. Aghada registered their first point after 1 minute with a free. Charleville scored a point from play after 3 minutes. Scores were hard to come by as both teams contested fiercely for the ball and no player had the time to pick their scores. Aghada registered the next 3 scores from placed balls before Charleville scored their second point on the 25 minute. Charelville employed a sweeper heading towards half time to stem the Aghada scores. Aghada pushed on and played with 7 forwards heading towards the half time whistle. At half time Aghada lead by 0-05 to 0-02. As the second half started the wind increased and there was some very strong gusts. Charleville were the first to score after 5 minutes. Aghada didn’t register a score until the 15 minute of the second half to hold a 0-06 to 0-03 lead. As we entered the final quarter the game kicked to life. First Charleville scored a point, the fitness of the Aghada girls was seen as they carried every ball and ran directly at Charleville. Aghada were awarded a number of frees. They scored a point from a free. There next score was a goal when the free was held up by the wind and the Aghada forwards followed in on the ball and rattled the net. Aghada led 1-07 to 0-04 with 5 minutes remaining. The Aghada defence was amazing some brave tackling and blocks and a great save by the Aghada keeper to keep Charleville at bay and deep into injury time Charleville got a point and from the puck out the referee blew the final whistle. Final score Aghada 1-07 to 0-05. This was a tremendous display from every player. The played some fantastic camogie in difficult conditions and worked for each other over the whole hour. Aghada had played the same Charleville team 2 years ago in U14A championship and lost the match 8-11 to 0-01. So in 2 years to turn around that result is a fantastic achievement and shows the commitment and work ethic displayed by the girls on improving their hurling skills.
