Senior football league Division 3 – Aghada 2-16 v Nemo Rangers 2-9
Our senior footballers got their 1st win in the league when they had a comfortable win over Nemo’s second team in sundrenched Rostellan last Sunday the 2nd of April. Aghada, and Cian Fleming in particular, were quick out of the blocks, with corner forward Fleming kicking 3 fine points from play in the 1st 10 minutes. Nemo had only one in reply in this period, but on 11 minutes Aghada needed ‘keeper Ciaran O Shea to make a fine stop preventing a certain goal. Nemo pointed a free on 15 minutes, but 2 minutes later Shane Bennett goaled with a smart finish after Fleming played him in. Next Tom O’Neill pointed after 1st dispossessing his man and Aghada had a 1-4 v 0-2 lead. From the kick out Rangers with 2 fine passes went the length of the pitch and smashed home a great goal of their own. They followed this up with another free and all of a sudden it was a one point game again, with 10 minutes to go the short whistle. From here to the break Aghada outscored the city outfit 3 points to one, the pick of which was a fine finish from Fleming after a good run up field from wing back Jordan Tynan. 1-7 v 1-4 at half time and Aghada would have a nice wind behind them for the second period.
Again Aghada were quick out of the blocks. Recent signing Daryel O’Brien had been introduced after 2 minutes of the 1st half to replace Pearse O’Neill who picked up an injury. The former Kildare senior really dictated the whole Aghada forward line and pulled the strings in an impressive attacking performance. He kicked his 2nd point from the 2nd half throw in and then set up Kevin O’Hanlon for another 3 minutes later. Nemo had the next 3 points, 1 from play and 2 placed balls to leave just 2 points between the sides, and 10 minutes gone. The game was decided however in the next 10 minute period, with Aghada notching 1-5 with only a point in reply from Nemo. 1st Marcus Leahy on his senior competitive debut put through Tynan for a point. Next the impressive Jake O’Donoghue played a super pass to Kevin O’Hanlon, who buried the leather in the back of the Nemo net. The Aghada defence was playing well, with Timmy Hartnett particularly excellent. Aaron Berry next pointed a monster attempt, before a Bennett point increased his personal tally to 1-2. Then O’Brien 1st hit his 3rd of the day with his left peg and then set up Fleming for another minor. 2 more points followed for Aghada from the boots of Will Leahy and another from Hanlon. Aghada now had their total of 2 – 16 and Nemo were on 1-8. To their credit they never gave up and the Capwell outfit hit 1-1 in the closing minutes but it was as they say, too little too late, and Aghada claimed the points on offer. Another recent signing also made his debut, Sam Burgess from Donegal, who came on at wing back in the second half and played well.
