Senior football league Division 3 – Aghada 1-15 v St Vincents 1-12; Rostellan 28/05/2017
Our senior footballers got their 3rd win in the league when they had 3 points to spare over St. Vincents on Sunday last. Played in a very blustery Rostellan, the cross field wind didn’t really have too much of an effect with 8 scores kicked in the opening 10 minutes. Vincents were the better team during this period and had 5 of these points, with Cian Fleming, Shane Bennett and corner back Tim Hartnett replying for Aghada. With Marcus Leahy playing well in midfield and Tim Hartnett and Mike Russell impressing at the back, Aghada started to get on top. John Looney was spraying the ball around well at centre forward and inside Shane Bennett looked particularly dangerous alongside Cian Fleming who was scoring freely. With 5 to go to the break Aghada had outscored their opponents 6 points to 1. Fleming had 5 and Bennett the other. Will Leahy, Aaron Berry and Tommy O’Donoghue among the players weighing in with the assists. Vincents punched a point on 26mins, but Marcus Leahy kicked a fine score a minute later after being set up by Bennett. Next Marcus Leahy won possession from the kickout and found Looney who in turn put Jordan Ryan through on goals, and the corner forward made no mistake burying a fine goal to the roof of the net. A Vincents free on 31 minutes was the last score of the half, which ended in a fiery manner with a Vincent’s player receiving a straight red card. 1-10 v 0-8 at the break and with an extra man Aghada were in a good position. The Northside club had other ideas however and 2 points in the opening 4 minutes, left just the goal between the teams. Now however Aghada began to dominate again. This time though, despite plenty possession, they found it harder to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Bennett pointed on 7 minutes, and Marcus got his second after 1st breaking up a Vincents attack with a good shoulder. Russell was fouled when charging forward from defence and Fleming pointed the free on 16 minutes, with Vincents replying from play a minute later. So with 10 minutes to go Aghada still held a five point lead. That changed very quickly when Vincents got in behind the Aghada defence and slipped a goal past Ciaran O’Shea in the Aghada goals. Daniel Creedon kicked a fine point from out on the left wing to settle Aghada again. And after a good run from Jordan Tynan, Fleming pointed from almost the same position on 24 minutes. In between Vincents pointed another free. The visitors also had two close in frees which they tried to engineer goals from, when maybe points would have been better options. Still it looked like a draw was on the cards, when Vincents earned a penalty on 28 minutes. However Aghada were very grateful to ‘keeper O’Shea who got down well to his right and saved the spot kick. Aghada played a bit of keep ball from here to the end, taking advantage of the extra man and held on for the win on a 1-15 to 1-12 scoreline.
