Junior C Football Championship Aghada 2-6 v Glenville 1-12 ,Thursday 13/4/2017, 7pm,Ballinacurra
Our 3rd team had their 1st round of their championship last Thursday the 13th of April. It was also a semi final, and Glenville’s 3rd team were the opponents. Aghada started the game brightly. Captain Charlie Terry found pacey corner forward Cian O’Driscoll who took off on a solo run, beating two defenders before blasting past the Glenville ‘keeper to open the scoring with a goal. Aghada were well on top for the opening 10 minutes but failed to finish on a number of occasions. They nearly had a second goal also, when corner forward Luke O’Connell saw his goal bound effort well saved. Gradually Glenville found their feet. They hit a point from play after 10 minutes, and a few minutes later they put together a nice attacking move that finished with a goal of their own. On 16 minutes Aghada got through on goals again, but this time full forward Ray Savage dragged his shot narrowly wide of the right hand upright. Glenville made Aghada pay for this miss and how. A super cross field pass found their corner forward who planked the ball into the top corner of the Aghada net, giving young David O’Sullivan in the Aghada goals no chance. Next up veteran of veterans Gerard Melvin was fouled when on the attack and Ray Savage pointed the resulting free. However as happened on a number of occasions, from the resulting kick out, Glenville replied instantly with a point of their own. They had another on 23 minutes, before Charlie Terry linked up well with Sam Burgess before kicking Aghada’s 2nd point. Then on 26 minutes young Cal Bawden, burst forward from wing back and kicked a fine score to leave just a goal between the sides. However again from the kick out, Glenville replied and when they pointed a free on the stroke of half time, they had a comfortable 2-5 v 1-3 lead at the break.
Aghada got the worst possible start to the second half, when the Glenville forwards were 1st to react to a rebound off the post and pounced for their 3rd goal. Cian O’Driscoll was fouled when bearing down on goals 2 minutes later and pointed the free himself. A Glenville point from play on 9 minutes marked an 11 minute period of no scoring from either outfit, with defences well on top. Michael Gilroy and Shane Dorney were particularly impressive at the back for Aghada. Melvin converted a free after being fouled himself on 21 minutes and when O’Driscoll did the same 2 minutes later, there was a hint of a comeback in the air. However the Glenville outfit had other ideas and effectively put the game to bed with 5 minutes to play when they struck for their 4th major of the night. To Aghada’s credit they kept going right to the end. Cian O’Driscoll played a nice one two with Ger O’Brien and buried his and Aghada’s second goal with 3 minutes to play. Glenville however hit 1-1 in these 3 minutes, the 5th goal summing up Aghada’s evening after O’Sullivan initially made a good stop only to see Glenville goal the rebound. In the end the better team won, even if the score line slightly flattered them at the end.
