Intermediate Hurling League – Aghada 2-17 v Kanturk 2-22; 1/9/2017
A lot of this year’s league games in hurling have been of a very high standard and very enjoyable to watch and the Friday night encounter with Kanturk was such a game. Played in perfect conditions in Rostellan, the North Cork premier Intermediate outfit came out on top, but both teams will have taken positives from a very entertaining hours hurling.
Coming up to the 20 minute mark, the sides were level at 8 points apiece. Cian Fleming had 3 of those points, Pearse O’Neill and Will Leahy had 2 and wing back Billy Hennessy chipped in with another after a good intercept. Jack McDonald also had brought the 1st of a number of outstanding saves from Kanturk and Cork net minder Anthony Nash. Next however, Kanturk upped the ante, when they hit two very good goals in a 3 minute spell to put daylight between the teams. Aghada responded very well, hitting the next 3 points, all Fleming frees. 2 from play from Kanturk followed as the half time whistle approached. Then John Looney made a great solo run through the heart of the defence, before smartly flicking the ball in Fleming’s direction. The corner forward doubled on the sliothar 1st time in the air giving Nash no chance. Aghada could have had a second moments later when Pearse O’Neill again drew a fantastic stop from Nash. A ’65 was the outcome which Fleming again pointed. 2-11 v 1-12 in favour of Kanturk and it was anyone’s game.
Aghada got the scoreboard moving again just after the restart. Fleming pointed a free, and then Looney again soloed through and again off loaded to Fleming who riffled an unstoppable shot to the top corner of the net. Kanturk had only a point in the same period, but they had hit a number of wides and slowly looked like they were getting on top in proceedings. Aghada only scored 1 point between the 5th and 20th minutes (Ronan Kennedy from play), whereas the visitors hit 5. All from play, all very well taken scores. There was 3 points in at this stage and still all to play for. The sides exchanged points in the 10 minute home stretch, but as the game headed for 5 minutes of injury time, Aghada were still in with a shout. Kanturk finished the stronger however, hitting 3 points with Aghada only having a Will Leahy free after Tommy O’Donoghue was fouled, in response. The league points left with Kanturk, but both sides will have been happy overall with the outing in preparation for upcoming championship games.
