Intermediate Hurling League – Aghada 0-18 v Meelin 3-10; Rostellan 17/6/2017
Goals for Meelin in the 8th, 9th and 10th minute of this game, ultimately gave the North Cork outfit the spoils from sunny Rostellan last Saturday, but even allowing for this goal blitz, Aghada will still feel they should have won the game. On top for nearly all the 60 minutes, it was the kind of game where you were waiting for Aghada to go on and win, but it just never materialised due in no small part to a dogged Meelin performance. The scoreboard read 3-2 to 0-5 after that Meelin goal burst, and from here to the break, Aghada outscored their opponents 5 points to 2 to leave just 3 points in it at the break. Will Leahy had 5 first half points for Aghada, with Cian Fleming hitting 3 and John Looney chipping in with a couple also. A strong breeze blew straight up the field towards the forest end and Aghada would have it to their backs for the second half.
The second half started well when half time substitutes Tom O’Neill and Daniel Creedon combined to set up Kevin O’Hanlon for the opening point of the second period. It was a one point game 10 minutes later. Points came from a Fleming free, Charlie Terry and Aaron Stafford , with Meelin scoring twice in reply. When Will Leahy earned a free and pointed it himself, the sides were level with 15 minutes to play. Meelin responded well however and hit two frees in the next minute to restore their lead. Still Aghada had most of the play and the sides were level again with 10 to play after Fleming pointed after a good solo run and then Terry finished off a good team move. 2 minutes later a good drive out of defence from full back John O’Connor set up Leahy for another point and Aghada were now up by one and looking odds on to win the match. Meelin came again however and a free on 24 minutes followed by a point from play on 26 minutes put them back in the lead by the slightest of margins. Aghada had plenty of possession , but try as they might they couldn’t find the scores to give them either a win or a share of the spoils and Meelin held on for the victory. Next up for our hurlers is the 2nd round of the championship against Sarsfields. Neither team can be knocked out of the championship at this stage, but a great contest between two East Cork rivals going flat out for the win can be expected none the less.
