The year was 1889 just four years after the club was founded Aghada qualified for our first county final, having beating St. Marys in the semi Aghada were pitted against Inniscarra. The match was fixed for the polo grounds in Ballincollig. Aghada thought that the match should be played at Caherlag as it was more central. The polo grounds were 25 miles from Aghada while only 6 miles from Inniscarra. A very large meeting of Gaels took place in Aghada village under the chairmanship of Mr. J. O Callaghan. In his opening address he stated everyone that was acquainted with the rules of the GAA knew that foremost amongst them was one which stated that the ground for playing should be fixed so as to be equally convenient to both team. The Aghada Hon Secretary Mr. Walsh went on to state that one of the reasons why the match was fixed for the polo grounds was that the officers of Ballincollig Barracks expressed a wish to see the contest\”.
