Intermediate Hurling League Division 2 – Aghada 0-15 v Watergrasshill 1-14
Our 1st league game of year (originally an away fixture) was played in Rostellan on Thursday 2nd of March. Both teams struggled with the very heavy underfoot conditions and frequent showers but none the less served up an entertaining hours hurling. Watergrasshill opened the scoring almost straight from the throw in, with a point from play. This was quickly cancelled out via a long range free from centre back Michael Russell. The ‘Hill had a very slight wind behind them for the 1st half and restored their lead from a placed ball on 4 minutes. Again Aghada responded quickly, this time Will Leahy doing the honours again from a free. That was to set the tone for Aghada in the first half, with Leahy being the outstanding performer, and Aghada’s only scorer for the rest of the half. On 10 minutes with Aghada in front by a point, Watergrasshill pounced for goal, which was a crucial score on a night such as it was. Ronan Kennedy was heavily involved around midfield for Aghada, with Jack McDonald and Stevie Keeffe also industrious in this area. Pearse O’Neill was making a nuisance of himself upfront, but at times it was almost Will against the ‘Hill as the Aghada centre forward hit 8 points in total, 4 frees and 4 from play, in the opening moiety. It was score for score however between both sides and at half time the score was Aghada 0-9 V Watergrasshill 1-8. The final score of the half was a real beauty from Leahy from tight on the right hand sideline.
The second half followed the same pattern of the 1st. With 15 minutes played both sides had tacked on 3 points. Aghada’s scores came from a Leahy free and Charlie Terry and Ronan Kennedy pointed from play. Aghada’s full back line of Tim Hartnett, John O’Connor and Jake O’Donoghue were very solid at the back. On 17 minutes Pearse O’Neill got through on goal and while his shot beat the ‘Hill ‘keeper it was stopped on the line by a defender and cleared out for a’65. Leahy pointed the ’65, and when substitute Daniel Creedon picked off a nice score a few minutes later, the game was all square with 7 minutes remaining. A soft free conceded gave Watergrasshill the chance to restore the lead, which they duly converted. Charlie Terry then hit a super point, his second of the night, and the sides were tied again. Watergrasshill converted another free and when they won possession from the puck out, they struck a good score from play to restore the 2 point lead. Try as Aghada might, and although they had plenty possession, they couldn’t find the scores needed and when referee Ger Scully blew the final whistle, it was Watergrasshill who took home the spoils.

A great night was had by all when Neven brought his cookery demonstration roadshow to the Raddison, Little Island last Thirsday the 2nd of March. A night of craic, chat and not a small bit of cooking thrown in for good measure, ensured the night was hugely entertaining and a great success. Thanks to Aghada’s fundraising committee, Neven’s team and the Raddision hotel.
