Junior Hurling Championship Rd 3 – Aghada 0-11 v Castlelyons 4-19; 28/8/2017.
Aghada’s JB hurlers bowed out of this year’s championship, when they were well beaten by a far superior Castlelyons outfit last Monday night. After winning the toss the game was played in Rostellan, but from the throw in Castlelyons demolished any hometown advantage Aghada may have had and rattled off 2 goals and 2 points in the opening 2 and a half minutes of the match. This set the tone for what was to come. It was 2-5 to 2pts in the visitors favour with 10 minutes played. Aghada’s points came from the impressive Marcus Leahy from play, and a well taken free from Daniel Creedon. Slowly now Aghada got to grips with their opponents and from here to the half time whistle, both sides hit 4 points apiece. Aghada though also missed a good number of handy enough scoring opportunities in this period and could have gone in much closer at half time had they taken some of them. That said, Castlelyons always looked like they could go up a few gears when they sensed any danger coming their way. At the short whistle it was Aghada 0-6 v Castlelyons 2-9.
On resumption, Castlelyons again burst out of the blocks. They hit 2-4 without reply in the opening 10 minutes and whatever faint hope there was of an Aghada comeback, was now well and truly extinguished. Still, all credit to the Aghada players, they battled on game fully, particularly Aiden O’Connell, Richie Condon, Daniel Creedon, Marcus Leahy and Luke O’Connell who had a fine game when moved to full back. Aiden O’Connell burst through from midfield to shoot at goals on 12 minutes but the Castlelyons ‘keeper saved. Conal Rabbitt pointed the ’65. A minute later Marcus hit a fine point from play. Very much like the 1st half it was an even enough affair from here to the end, but Castlelyons obviously knew that they had the game well won. They hit 6 more points from play. In reply Aghada hit 3, the pick of them being a fine score on the run from Daniel Creedon after taking a nice pass from corner forward Alan Walsh. In between both Alan and Daniel tested the Castlelyons keeper with shots on goal, but he was up to the challenge on both occasions. Final score was Castlelyons 4-19, Aghada 11 points.
