Funday in Aid of Cancer Awareness/ Charlie Mc Carthy Tribute
On Saturday the 30th of December, club members got together in Rostellan to raise awareness and funds for Cancer. An U12 exhibition football match took place 1st at 1pm. And to be honest, when that game ended, so too did any hope of seeing quality football played on the day. The excellent U12 footballers were followed onto the new forest pitch by over 40 veterans of the club, who were squeezed into club jerseys in a vain attempt to roll back the clock to days of past glories. After about 5 minutes, most realised that survival was going to be the name of the game. John Motherway on the whistle and Paul Kilbane doing a running commentary, did show that class is permanent, however some of the on field exploits left vast room for improvement. When all was said and done everyone was still standing (and laughing), so that was an achievement in itself. One or two hamstrings had popped alright, but thankfully the 4 ambulances on standby were not needed. Over €2000 euro was raised on the day, so a huge thank you to all who supported/organised/participated on the day.
In between the two exhibition games, a hugely sad moment for our club was recognised, when a tribute was paid to Charlie McCarthy who died tragically in Australia recently. Aghada club jerseys were laid out in his honour on the pitch and Charlie’s contribution to the club, and the outstanding example he set in terms of commitment and dedication to Aghada Gaa, was recognised. A poignant minutes silence was observed for the McCarthy Family, before Donal Walsh sang the Aghada Anthem. A huge crowd attended and signed the book of condolences which was open in the clubhouse in Rostellan, which showed just how popular and well liked Charlie McCarthy was. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his family.
U21 Glenville Football tournament
Our U21s got the playing season underway in earnest last Sunday morning, when they played Glanmire in the 1st game of the Glenville U21 tournament. Defeat was our lot on the morning however as we conceded 4 goals and lost 4-5 v 9 pts. Next up is Mitchelstown away this Sunday the 14th. At 12.30pm.
A fantastic achievement and congratulations to John Looney who made his debut with the Cork senior hurling team last Sunday in the Munster senior hurling league. John came on as a 1st half substitute and scored a point in Corks defeat to Clare.
The current Lotto jackpot is €4,750 and will take place in Healy’s Bar on Jan 11th. Congrats to Paul Aspinwall (who came out twice), Mossie Manning, Maureen Fitzgerald, Sinead Walsh who each won €30 in last weeks draw.
